Universal has been raking in the big bucks with its Jurassic World franchise, and now The Hollywood Reporter has reported that we may be getting a new movie as soon as 2025. Best of all, David Koepp has been tapped to write the new film. Koepp wrote the fantastic original 1993 Jurassic Park and its sequel Jurassic Park: The Lost World, so they definitely have the right person for the job.

Original Writer And Director Reuniting For Jurassic World Sequel?

There currently isn’t a director attached to the new Jurassic World movie, but Steven Spielberg is executive producing through his Amblin Entertainment company. We can all certainly cross our fingers that Spielberg will decide to come back to direct the film after directing Jurassic Park and Jurassic Park: The Lost World. Although we got an on-screen reunion of the original film’s actors with Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum appearing in 2022’s Dominion, it would be great to have Spielberg and Koepp reunite behind the scenes.

A New Era For Jurassic Park

Also returning to the franchise are Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley, who were both producers of the Jurassic World trilogy. It seems like this new film may be following a new batch of characters despite the “World” designation. The sources in The Hollywood Reporter report say that it will be a new storyline in a “new Jurassic era,” meaning that we likely won’t see World or Jurassic Park cast members returning.

Still One Of The Most Successful Franchises In History

The Jurassic World and Jurassic Park franchises have grossed over $6 billion worldwide, even if the most recent film, Dominion, was critically panned. It seems like there are plenty of people still willing to pay to see dinosaurs at the theater, as long as they’re from the world Michael Crichton started in his 1990 novel. The muted critical and audience reception to the story of the World franchise means that a creative pivot may be needed in order to keep audiences coming, and having David Koepp attached in a creative capacity is definitely a step in the right direction.

Will It Surpass The Original Jurassic Park?

The new Jurassic World movie will be overseen by Universal’s Executive VP of Production Development, Sara Scott, and Creative Executive of Production Development, Jacqueline Garell. As one of Universal’s biggest and most recognizable franchises, there’s definitely hope that the new film in the franchise will be able to come close to the timelessness and quality of the original Jurassic Park. It remains to be seen if Koepp is able to pull off movie magic once again.

Could The New Film Bridge The Gap Between Park And World?

It’ll be interesting to see if the new Jurassic World film will follow the storyline from that trilogy or if it could take place between the Jurassic Park trilogy and the Jurassic World films. In either case, Koepp has his work cut out for him to create something that will make fans want to come back to the franchise after Dominion was so ill-received. Although the Jurassic franchise has a lot of goodwill and fan love behind it, you can only keep a franchise alive so long off of nostalgia and desire for another good Jurassic film alone.
