Let’s be honest, does anyone actually go to see Jurassic Park films for anything but the dinosaurs? In a very smart move made by Universal Pictures, the production company decided to release a five-minute-long prologue for the upcoming Jurassic World: Dominion. What is most interesting about this marketing choice is that the prologue video shows the world 65 million years ago when dinosaurs walked the Earth. Well played, Universal.

The prologue shows the makings of what could have been a documentary on the Discovery Channel, as CGI animated dinosaurs are shown living their normal pre-extinction lives. Quite a few new species are shown in the prologue short that have never made their debut in the Jurassic Park realm. This could be some foreshadowing for Jurassic World: Dominion and potential new dinosaurs that will make their debut. Even better is the fight that takes place between two Tyrannosaurs Rex species.

The original Tyrannosaurus Rex is shown battling it out with some new form of the T-Rex, as it looks meaner, has entirely more intimidating horns on the backside of its body, and easily dispatches the T-Rex we have all known and loved since the first Jurassic Park film came out in the early 90s. Another nod to the original film is the mosquito that flies over and fills its body with blood from the dead T-Rex. Could this be the mosquito that started the entire film franchise? Jurassic World: Dominion does, in fact, bring back the original cast.

Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are set to reprise their roles of Owen Grady and Claire Dearing. But Jurassic World: Dominion is also bringing back original actors, Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum, and Laura Dern. The original and new cast coming together is fitting considering the nods to original film in the prologue. After the stint with the archaic world and dinosaurs, we are returned to the present day and a chopper attempting to sedate a T-Rex.

The tropes of an old horror film are heavily played with as well, as you can see a drive-in movie theater packed with people turns into utter chaos. The old-school, “Let’s All go to the Lobby” song plays in the background as patrons are thrown about by a charging dinosaur. Couples making out in their cars are unaware of the carnage that is unfolding right in front of them. Jurassic World: Dominion seems to want to merge the old with the new in its promotional work and the subject matter.

Jurassic World Dominion

Universal Pictures has stated that this “prologue” will be a big part of the upcoming Jurassic World: Dominion film. Prologues are usually at the beginning of any film, but patrons are sure to get a kick out of seeing the mosquito that was the focal point for the original. Releasing another traditional trailer would have been a smart move, but this prologue definitely gives a much better feeling for the upcoming film. At the very least, we are all treated to a fantastic T-Rex fight. Jurrasic World: Dominion is set to release in theaters worldwide in June 2022.
