The pilot episode introduces viewers to Sydney Bristow (Jennifer Garner) as an undergraduate student seven years before current events. She is approached by someone claiming to work for the Central Intelligence Agency and is offered her a job as an agent.

After accepting the position, she is assigned to a unit called SD-6, which to her knowledge, was a secret Black Ops section of the CIA.

In the present day, Sydney (Jennifer Garner) tells her fiancé Danny Hecht (Edward Atterton) that she is a spy. As a result, Danny is murdered by the SD-6.

Sydney soon discovers some troubling secrets about her father and the agency she has dedicated her life to. SD-6 is not part of the CIA and is part of an organization called the Alliance of Twelve, an enemy of the United States.
