As crazy as it sounds, James Gunn made a teaser announcing that he will be killing off at least one character in Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3, which is slated to release on May 5, 2023. The announcement came via an official Instagram post from James Gunn’s account. According to the post, a fan commented, “Not really an end of an era as Marvel will continue making Guardians films and including the characters in films like Thor: Love and Thunder” with Gunn responding with, “Not all of them.”

While originally just speculation from the intense trailer, the caption from James Gunn’s account gives fans more ideas and possibly proves more theories about the third installment of Guardians of the Galaxy.

Gunn is calling the final movie the “end of an era” and with James Gunn’s transfer over to DC Studios, this gives a load of credibility to the original theory. To add to this theory that at least one of the main heroes will be meeting their tragic end is the fact that someone has died in every single Guardians of the Galaxy movie to date.

The original Groot in Volume 1. Of course, he came back to star as baby Groot in the sequel, but some could argue that was just a way to sell more merchandise. In Volume 2, James Gunn ended up killing off Yondu. The four-word comment from James Gunn might confirm that one or more of everyone’s favorite heroes could be meeting their end when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 releases.

Many have guessed that the artificially evolved raccoon, Rocket, will get the ax. He has received a backstory, a love-story arc, and now had a face-to-snout showdown with a major villain; it would go in James Gunn’s style to exterminate the little rascal. The million-dollar question on any Guardians of the Galaxy fan’s mind is who else will be on the chopping block?

On the other hand, the invisible boulder of a humanoid man Drax could be meeting his end. Dave Bautista made it clear that he would be ending his time in the MCU via Instagram earlier this year. After stepping into the spotlight during the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, Drax may become invisible for real, and James Gunn could be giving him a proper Guardians of the Galaxy send-off.

It is worth mentioning the obvious choices who get to venture deeper into the MCU after James Gunn hangs up his Guardians of the Galaxy towel for good. Chris Pratt as Star-Lord is a given. His marketability, canonical place in the MCU, and his being a fan-favorite character give him a strong chance to stay in Marvel’s continuity longer.

Gamora, played by Zoe Saldana, is another fan-favorite character who might not meet their end. While she never died in any of the Guardians movies to date, she was murdered during Avengers: Infinity War (2018) which would make her death not only pointless but would leave a sour taste in fans’ mouths. Though James Gunn could plan to kill her off in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Marvel does love its spinoffs.

Fans of the MCU do tend to spin insane theories and predictions for any upcoming film. Some theories end up proving true, but with the available evidence, it appears that James Gunn will be killing at least one member of the Guardians of the Galaxy.
