Michael Pena in A Million Miles Away

Michael Pena is an actor who can easily switch between the comedy and drama genres, bringing humor to the MCU in films like Ant-Man and gravitas to films like End of Watch. Pena puts his penchant for bringing warmth to any character to great effect in the inspiring film A Million Miles Away, which is based on a true story. If you want a feel-good film, then this one is worth checking out, and you can catch it now on Amazon Prime Video.

A Million Miles Away, featuring Ant-Man’s Michael Pena, is now available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.

A Million Miles Away is based on the autobiography Reaching for the Stars by Jose M. Hernandez, who became the first Mexican-American astronaut. Pena plays Hernandez in the biopic, with Garrett Dillahunt, Rose Salazar, Bobby Soto, Julio Cesar Cedillo, Veronica Falcon, Sarayu Blue, Eric Johnson, Jordan Dean, Ashley Ciarra, Michelle Kruseic, Carlos S Sanchez, Isaac Arellanes, Emma Fassler, Isabel Aerenlund, and Michael Adler also starring.

Alejandra Marquez Abella directed the film from a screenplay written by Bettina Gilois and re-written by Hernan Jimenez and Abella from Hernandez’s book.

A Million Miles Away is an inspiring true story that initially focuses on Jose M. Hernandez’s life as the son of immigrant farmers and his relationship with his family. We then follow his journey to becoming an engineer and eventually joining NASA’s STS-128 as their Mission Specialist.

The film divides its time between showing Hernandez’s interactions with his family and his climb to become the first Mexican-American astronaut.

A Million Miles Away received good reviews, with many people praising it for being a heartwarming and uplifting story about Hernandez’s determination. Some critique points out that the film is a fairly formulaic biopic but that the tropes are well used, and the film is worth the watch — both for retelling Hernandez’s story and for its engaging plot and solid performances. In short, if you’re looking for an inspirational film, this one will definitely give you what you want.

Keep in mind that if you’re looking for a space film, A Million Miles Away puts most of his time in the NASA program toward the back third of the film. Much of the plot is driven by his relationship with his family and his determination to push himself toward his goal. We do get to see some of his time in NASA, but the story isn’t as focused on the mission itself as Hernandez’s efforts to get there.

A Million Miles Away was initially in development over at Netflix before Amazon Studios snagged the rights for it in 2022. So, if you haven’t heard of this film until now, you shouldn’t be surprised because it was only released last week. The film first hit Amazon Prime Video on September 15, 2023, so it hasn’t been out for long.

As mentioned, early reviews for A Million Miles Away are great, so it’s worth checking out if you’re planning your movie night for this weekend. It’s also been a while since we’ve seen Michael Pena in the lead role for a film, so it’s worth checking out if you’re a fan of his. Plus, as long as you’re watching the film on Amazon Prime Video, you can easily segue to watching Pena’s latest role in the fourth season and final season of Jack Ryan.

Michael Pena plays Dingo Chavez in Jack Ryan, and there is reportedly a spin-off in development that will star his character. So, now is the perfect time to catch up on the John Krasinski-led Jack Ryan series and get to know Pena’s character before he gets his own show in the near future. Jack Ryan is obviously not quite as feel-good as A Million Miles Away, but both feature solid performances for Pena, so they’re worth checking out for that reason.

While we wait for Michael Pena to get his own Jack Ryan spin-off, make sure to check out A Million Miles Away on Amazon Prime Video this weekend. Pena doesn’t currently have any projects listed on his upcoming slate, but hopefully, we’ll learn that he is also returning to his role in the MCU in the near future. In any case, we’ll keep you updated on this and all of Pena’s other projects.
