Could Henry Cavill finally be returning as Superman in an upcoming DC project? It's already starting to feel long overdue for the character

One of the lingering questions for the DC Extended Universe right now is around which characters and actors will ultimately make their way back onto the big and small screen in future productions. Things are looking bright for the studio with a number of different projects in the works, some returning previous Justice League members. But one guy whose future is somewhat in doubt is Henry Cavill as Superman. While we are going to see different iterations of the character coming soon, those will be different versions than Cavill’s and it really isn’t totally clear what the plan is for his version of Superman. But there is now a new rumor that Cavill will have a cameo in The Flash which could reintroduce his character into the larger story.

This latest Henry Cavill rumor comes after a Twitter user (via LRM Online) had posted both Black Widow and The Flash set photos, clearly signaling there was some behind-the-scenes access. This same user then made the claim that Henry Cavill had shot a couple of scenes for The Flash, meaning we could see something like a Justice League reunion in that film. While that news hasn’t (and probably won’t be) corroborated by the studio, it would definitely make sense for DC to want at least some continuity between the films in terms of their casting.

The Flash is set to have Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen speeding through the DC version of the Multiverse with some other DC characters involved as well. Ben Affleck is set to reprise his Bruce Wayne/ Batman role, likely for the last time in what looks like it will be something of a send-off for the character. And we do know that the film will bring back Michael Keaton for that version of the Caped Crusader as well. Plus, the flick is set to introduce Sasha Calle’s Supergirl, though that character is thought to come from a different timeline/ universe than Henry Cavill as Superman. It’s led to the speculation that this was one way DC would phase Cavill out of things, bringing in a new Kryptonian.

But there still remain reasons for pessimism around Henry Cavill returning to the DC Extended Universe. For starters, there was a chance to do this recently in the season finale of Peacemaker which saw cameos from Jason Momoa as Aquaman and Ezra Miller as The Flash who show up (too late) to help the titular character. We see a floating shadow of Superman off to the side as well, but they clearly didn’t have Cavill there in the role. It was merely a hat tip to the character in that respect.

And we also know that DC has plans for the Superman character moving forward that don’t involve Henry Cavill at all. One is a movie coming from J.J. Abrams and Ta-Nehisi Coates which is believed to involve the Calvin Ellis version of the character from the comic book. Plus, there is a planned Michael B. Jordan project that will focus on the Val-Zod character. This would point to a clear shift away from Henry Cavill in the role.

But this recent news around Henry Cavill returning as Superman in The Flash definitely could have some legs. And with the DC Multiverse coming into full view, there are going to be opportunities for different versions of the character. Here’s to hoping we see him in the cape once again.
