One of the heroic doctors on ABC‘s flagship medical drama just became a hero in real life. Grey’s Anatomy star Caterina Scorsone survived a devastating fire at her home in Southern California. The actress posted a picture on Instagram of the destruction caused by the fire, along with a detailed account of the harrowing experience in which she saved her children.

In the caption for the photo, The actress, best known for playing Dr. Amelia Shepherd on Grey’s Anatomy, tells of her tragic experience. Caterina Scorsone was lucky enough to save her three children from the blaze but still suffered some casualties along the way. “Heartbreakingly, we lost all four of our pets,” recounted Scorsone on Instagram.

Sadly, the pets were a huge loss for Scorsone’s family. Three adorable cats and one beautiful dog perished in the fire. While the Grey’s Anatomy star confessed that the family is still not over their deaths, she expressed gratitude that the family was able to spend the time that they did have with them. “We are lucky we got to love them at all,” Caterina Scorsone said.

The actress isn’t one to dwell on the negative, however, and quickly switched the focus to her community and the support they offered her in her time of need. Scorsone shouted out the Grey’s Anatomy team as well as everyone at Shondaland, the production company founded by Grey’s producer Shonda Rhimes. Caterina Scorsone aimed the thank yous at “my friends at @greysabc and @shondaland, who sent clothing and supplies.”

The actress didn’t just thank Rhimes and Grey’s Anatomy, however. Caterina Scorsone also gave thanks to the “firefighters and the investigators,” as well as her neighbors and her sisters. Scorsone went as far as to say, “The only thing that matters is community,” before expressing that she and her children wouldn’t be alive today without it.

Scorsone included several pictures of the home pre-fire as well as her pets to honor their memory. The last picture from the post shows Caterina sitting on the floor with her girls playing a board game. She posted it “to celebrate that we have the only thing we ever really needed: each other.”

The Grey’s Anatomy star said the fire happened a couple of months ago and came on so fast she had less than three minutes to get everyone out of the house. Caterina Scorsone recounted that the fire happened just as she finished putting her daughters to bed. The actress said that Eliza, 10, Paloma, 6, and the aptly named Lucky, 3 all escaped with “less than the shoes on our feet.”

Luckily the actress will have steady employment while she gets back on her feet. While her IMDb doesn’t list anything new upcoming, Grey’s Anatomy is currently in the middle of its 19th season and was just picked up for season 20, so Caterina Scorsone has plenty to take her mind off the tragedy.

Fellow Grey’s Anatomy actor Jake Borelli expressed his condolences in a comment on the post and sent his love to Caterina Scorsone and her family. Schitt’s Creek alum Emily Hampshire was another celebrity that reached out to comfort one of their own on Instagram. Hampshire called Scorsone an “Incredible human” and said she was grateful that Caterina existed in the world.

The actress didn’t say what caused the fire in the first place, and currently, the cause is unknown.
