God of War series

Sony announced a God of War TV show back in 2022, but there has been very little in the way of updates. Finally, Sony confirmed at CES 2024 that the series is making progress, confirming that writing for the show has officially begun. Along with that announcement, Sony let fans know that writing has begun for the Horizon Zero Dawn adaptation as well and gave us a short glimpse of the Gravity Rush film with some early animated scenes and motion capture footage.

When major TV shows like God of War don’t have release dates, you never really know when you’re going to see them come to fruition, so it’s nice to get this update. Likely, Sony is more than happy to move these productions along after the massive success of HBO’s The Last of Us, which easily proved that people are interested in watching shows based on Sony’s biggest IPs. Of course, the second season of The Last of Us has been confirmed for a while now, and we even learned that Kaitlyn Dever has been cast in the major role of Abby.

God of War is undoubtedly one of Sony’s biggest IPs, especially after the critically acclaimed sequel series that included 2018’s God of War and God of War: Ragnarok. The original game trilogy (along with its handheld spin-offs) told the story of Kratos, who becomes a servant to Ares after asking for the god’s help to win a battle. Eventually, Kratos takes Ares’ place and battles many figures and gods from Greek mythology.

The action-packed original trilogy had amazing lore while also being hyper-violent and brutal. The more thoughtful sequel duology saw an older Kratos grappling with his past while traveling with his son, Atreus, through Norse lands to spread the ashes of his wife on the highest peak in the lands. Along the way, Kratos and Atreus run afoul of figures from Norse mythology.

While it would have been interesting to see the God of War TV series begin with Kratos’ story in Greece, the show will be jumping straight to adapting the Norse duology of games. It’s an interesting choice, especially since some story beats of the new games rely on knowledge of Kratos’ past. It seems likely we may see some flashback episodes or at least flashback scenes set in Greece to provide some added context to Kratos’ story.

The decision to adapt the Norse games right away isn’t’ surprising, considering those games have been showered with critical acclaim and have recency on their side. Not to mention the fact that the story in the Norse games is just better and more mature. Regardless of which direction the show decides to take, it’s super exciting to imagine a God of War series operating at the same level of quality as the The Last of Us series.

When the God of War TV series eventually arrives, it will be premiering on Prime Video. In the meantime, DLC for God of War: Ragnarok was recently released, which sees Kratos continue to confront his past. You can download the Valhalla DLC for free if you already own Ragnarok.
