The most popular member of the X-Men, who hasn’t really gotten much in the way of movie screen time, is without a doubt Gambit. When Fox owned the X-Men they toyed with giving him a solo movie, even cast Channing Tatum in the role, before that project collapse. But Gambit’s popularity has spiked again and a Gambit movie may be in the works. Here’s all we know so far…

The Fan Film

After years of waiting for Remy LaBeau to show up on screen, fans have decided to take matters into their own hands. The result is a 20-minute fan film starring Eric Roberts as the villain, called Gambit: Play For Keeps.

That’s actor Nick Batemen starring as Gambit. He’s had bit parts in numerous random projects and fan films, but hasn’t really hit it big in Hollywood yet. Given his excellent performance in this fan made Gambit movie, that may be about to change. Bateman’s performance is a huge step up from the only other live-action Gambit we’ve seen, the one played terribly by Taylor Kitsch in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

The short is directed by Jensen Noen with Ellen Hollman doing a pretty great job as Rogue. Actually if I have any complaint here is that we still don’t get to see Rogue with her super strength and flying ability, however given the budget they probably had to work with on this I’m glad they chose to spend it on special effects for Remy instead of doing that.

Hopefully Marvel won’t act to cease and desist this movie into non-existence, as some companies (I’m looking at you Paramount) have done to other fan films. They posted it with this disclaimer, in an attempt to ward off rampaging lawyers who might seek to destroy them: “*DISCLAIMER: This is a fan made project. For nonprofit entertainment purposes only. This is not an official trailer, teaser or representation of Gambit, X-Men or its affiliates.”

The Official Gambit Movie

Gambit

Now that Disney/Marvel owns the X-Men, the character may finally get his due.

So far the only time we’ve seen Gambit on screen is in the terrible 2009 movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine where he was played by Taylor Kitsch. For a time there was a plan to make a Taylor Kitsch Gambit movie, but Disney/Marvel shut that project down last year when they re-acquired the rights to the X-Men from Fox. Whatever Marvel does with the character going forward is bound to be better than that.

Word is that Marvel Studios now has a script they like for a Gambit solo movie. They’re looking to recast the role and are reportedly considering bringing in Gore Verbinski. Verbinski was at one point attached to that old Fox Gambit solo movie project, which fell apart.
