Freaks can easily be labeled one of the best X-Men movies to date, and it’s now streaming on Prime Video for those lucky enough to have a subscription to the channel. The 2018 sci-fi thriller movie was written and directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein and was a box office hit upon release.

The Small Freaks Budget

Zach and Adam were reportedly only given a budget of $2,000 to make the movie, and they certainly got the job done. In total, Freaks brought in a gross income of just over $350,000 worldwide from its time in theaters.

Freaks also made a splash at several 2018 award ceremonies. Overall, the film was nominated for 15 different awards and it won 9 of them, including Best Film and the Audience Award at the Paris International Fantastic Film Festival (PIFFF).

Emile Hirsch Stars

Freaks stars Emile Hirsch (as the dad, Henry Lewis), Lexy Kolker (as Chloe Lewis), Bruce Dern (as Alan, Chloe’s grandpa), Amanda Crew (Chloe’s mom), and Grace Park (as Cecilia Ray, an agent with the Abnormal Defense Force).

The Freaks Story

The storyline of the movie centers around Chloe (a 7-year-old little girl) and her father, Henry. The two have lived as shut-ins in a rundown old house for the entirety of Chloe’s life.

Chloe’s father warns her that there is much danger outside the walls of their home, and continuously tells her that she should never venture outside.

As Freaks progresses, you find out that Chloe’s father is educating her on the social norms of society in hopes of Chloe one day living a normal life posing as a daughter of the Reed family.

Much More To The World

Henry plans to one day pass her off to the neighbors (the Reed family), so she can live safer and under the radar of what he calls “the bad men”.

When Chloe starts noticing a string of strange occurrences around the house, her curiosity gets the better of her and she does eventually find a way to venture outside before it is safe to do so.

When she defies her father’s warnings, Chloe quickly finds out that there is much more to the world around her than she once thought.

No Happily Ever After

The plot of Freaks quickly thickens when she meets a strange ice cream truck operator just outside of her home.

Upon realizing he is her maternal grandfather, the man explains to Chloe that her mother (who was once thought dead) is, in fact, alive.

After Chloe’s forbidden meeting with her grandfather, Freaks quickly ups the ante, and the action begins. Things blow up, people die, and some pretty cool superpowers are revealed.

In the end, not everyone lives happily ever after, but you are left with a feeling of empowerment and hope.

Freaks Streaming On Prime

All in all, Freaks is a pretty exciting watch. Fortunately, it’s also now streaming on Prime Video for your convenience.

The movie is rated “R”, so you might want to send the younger kids to bed before hitting “play”. It has a runtime of nearly two hours as well, so make sure you have plenty of popcorn ready for snacking and enjoy!
