Vanessa Kirby in Mission: Impossible Fallout

A new contender has entered the casting rumor mill for the MCU’s highly-anticipated Fantastic Four movie. While there’s plenty of room to be skeptical, a new rumor says that Vanessa Kirby could be Marvel‘s new Sue Storm/Invisible Woman. Furthermore, the rumor says that Kirby was who the director wanted for the role all along:

Vanessa Kirby’s breakout role was in The Crown, where she played Princess Margaret, before she proved her action movie bonafides in films like Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw and Mission: Impossible Fallout. Kirby certainly fits as a potential Sue Storm, and she would undoubtedly kill it in the role. However, this rumor definitely goes against the previous rumors that Margot Robbie was offered the Fantastic Four role.

Recent rumors have said that Margot Robbie was offered the role of Sue Storm in Fantastic Four, but that she had yet to accept or decline the role. Perhaps those rumors were true, and Robbie decided she didn’t want to sign up for what would likely be a role she’d have to play for many years. Since she has already dipped her toe into the comic book movie universe as Harley Quinn at DC, it’s possible that she is burnt out on big comic book movies for a while.

Then again, it’s possible that the Margot Robbie rumors were just rumors after all, and Vanessa Kirby was always the top choice. It’s likely that Marvel is going to try and keep the cast of Fantastic Four under wraps for as long as possible, so rumors are probably going to continue to be the best guesses we get at this casting situation. There are also plenty of rumors about the other members of the team.

Right now, the top rumor for Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic says that Adam Driver is in talks for the role. As for Johnny Storm/Human Torch and Ben Grimm/The Thing, the top rumors are saying that Paul Mescal and Daveed Diggs are being eyed for those roles, respectively. Hopefully, we learn who the full Fantastic Four lineup will be sooner than later.

We might have a while to wait since Fantastic Four isn’t set to come out until February 14, 2025. Matt Shakman is on board to direct the film with a script by Josh Friedman, rewritten from a previous script by Jeff Kaplan and Ian Springer. The film is set to kick off Phase Six of the MCU, so it will undoubtedly be an important piece of the Marvel puzzle.

The only other films that have been announced as part of Phase Six are the two Avengers films, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars. So, whoever does end up being cast in Fantastic Four will likely be popping up in these massive films too. As mentioned, signing on to an MCU role is no light commitment.

Whether or not we see Vanessa Kirby pop up in Fantastic Four, you can see her reprise her Mission: Impossible role this summer. Kirby will be returning in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. You can catch it when it hits theaters on July 12.
