Dwayne Johnson is about to own the superhero/ comic book genre when he releases a blockbuster for the DC Extended Universe next year. But he could soon be owning the holiday season as well? That looks like it’s going to be the case with a recent announcement that Johnson would be headlining a Christmas movie with a script from Fast & Furious alum Chris Morgan. Dwayne Johnson knows how to franchise action movies and now it looks like he’s going to be doing the same with the holidays.

There aren’t a ton of details about this new Christmas movie venture for Dwayne Johnson except that it’s already eyeing a franchise rollout with the idea that they are going to make multiple movies in this holiday universe. You don’t expect a guy like Johnson to take on a holiday of this size and try to distill it down to just one movie, do you? That’s just not his style. If he’s going to take on something as big as Christmas, then the jingle bells are going to ring out far and wide.

This next Dwayne Johnson holiday movie will be titled Red One which sounds more military than merry  with the rather un-holiday description of “a globe-trotting, four-quadrant action-adventure comedy, imagining a whole new universe to explore within the holiday genre.” This could mean almost anything, but it’s clearly not going to be a quaint little feel-good holiday romp through the suburbs with a tidy yuletide message at the end. No, this thing sounds like what happens when you task Fast & Furious folks and The Rock with a Christmas flick.

Dwayne Johnson and Chris Morgan have worked together in the past as well. The latter penned the scripts for Fast & Furious 6, Furious 7, and Fate of the Furious all of which had Johnson in them as part of the core franchise. Morgan also penned Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw which saw Johnson and Jason Statham spinning off the franchise. So there’s a track record here between the two of them in terms of a working relationship. And judging by their backgrounds, this won’t be your parent’s holiday film.

Before we get the holidays in the extreme, Dwayne Johnson has plenty to keep him busy over the next few years. He’s set to release Jungle Cruise later this summer which is based on the Disney attraction of the same name. It will have Johnson and Emily Blunt on a riverboat mission to find the Tree of Life. That’s due out July 30th.

Plus, after many pandemic-related delays, Red Notice is set to come out on Netflix at some point this year. That movie teams him up with Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot. Johnson plays an FBI agent tasked with tracking down the latter two, but the three ultimately end up working together in the action/ comedy.

And, of course, who could forget Black Adam, which is currently filming. That’s going to mark the entrance of Dwayne Johnson onto the superhero/ comic book movie landscape for the DC Extended Universe. It’s expected to be something of a darker film with the titular character more of an antihero type, at least to start. That’s due out sometime next year. So before Dwayne Johnson takes Christmas to the extreme!, he’s got plenty else to tackle first.
