Doctor Who Anniversary Fan Theory Shut Down By The Show

Doctor Who has finally confirmed how Yasmin Finney’s new character fits into the series. Previously referred to by just her first name, Rose has been the subject of speculation for months. In a post on the series’ official Twitter/X account, every fan theory was squashed as the character was revealed to be the daughter of companion Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) and Shaun Temple (Karl Collins).

Ever since Finney was announced joining Doctor Who in November episodes, fans have been guessing who Rose might be in relation to the beloved characters. The most popular theory was that Finney’s Rose is somehow related to Rose Tyler. Portrayed by Billie Piper, the character appeared alongside Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant‘s Doctors in 2005 and 2006

Rose Tyler was introduced as a new traveling companion of Doctor Who in his ninth and tenth incarnations. Created by series producer Russell T Davies, the character made her first appearance in the episode “Rose” in 2005 as the daughter of Jackie Tyler (played by Camille Coduri) and Pete Tyler (played by Shaun Dingwall).

Rose Tyler was known for her close relationship with the Doctor and made her last appearance in “The Day of the Doctor” in 2013. Billie Piper’s portrayal of Rose Tyler is highly regarded by fans and is often considered one of the best companions in Doctor Who. Piper reprised her role in Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor Adventures, released in November 2017.

So it’s not surprising that fans theorized that Finney’s Rose may be linked to the character portrayed by Piper. The only unanswered question about the new Rose is why she doesn’t share her father’s last name. The Doctor Who social media post introduced Finney’s character as Rose Noble instead of not Rose Temple. Even Rose Noble Temple would have been less worrisome.

It’s entirely possible that Donna still got her happy ending and is still married to Shaun. However, the very specific introduction by the Doctor Who social pages led some fans to believe that it may be a hint that Donna and Shaun broke up before Rose was born. Either way, all will be revealed when the anniversary special episodes hit screens in November.

Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary will be celebrated with three special episodes, called “The Star Beast,” “Wild Blue Yonder,” and “The Giggle,” written by Russell T Davies. The episodes will be broadcast on BBC One in the UK and Ireland and on Disney+ internationally. David Tennant and Catherine Tate will both return to the series as part of the anniversary shows.
