Matthew Mcfayden in Succession

We’re slowly getting more and more information about the hotly-anticipated Deadpool 3, with the latest news being Succession star Matthew Macfadyen has been cast in an undisclosed role. Variety confirmed the news that Macfadyen would officially be joining the MCU, meaning he might have a bigger bad to go up against than Logan Roy. Macfadyen is currently best known for his role as Tom Wambgans on the critically acclaimed HBO hit.

Macfadyen seems like the perfect addition to Deadpool 3, which will be the first R-rated film in the MCU. While Logan Roy won’t be starring alongside him, a different Logan will be present as Hugh Jackman reprises his role as the Canadian silver-clawed mutant. Of course, Ryan Reynolds also returns as the titular character.

It’ll be interesting to see who Macfadyen plays in Deadpool 3, as his role could end up playing a larger part in the MCU as a whole. Rumors are speculating that the film could lead into Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and that Kang could even be an antagonist in the film. Given the time travel elements that have been reported to be a significant part of the Deadpool threequel’s plot, these rumors could end up being true.

Deadpool 3 will see Shawn Levy return as director, and Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick will pen the script. The third Deadpool film is perhaps one of the most anticipated films in the upcoming MCU, and it could potentially be just the shot in the arm that the franchise needs. Recent negative reactions to Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania indicate that audiences might be wearing thin on the MCU, so an exciting and fresh entry to the franchise could be helpful for its long-term viability.

The previous Deadpool films have been major successes despite the R rating, and it seems certain that Deadpool 3 will have similar success. Not only is the franchise beloved by fans, but seeing Hugh Jackman return as Wolverine again will certainly bring a lot of people to the theaters. It’s also worth considering that the film could even be Marvel‘s way of introducing the X-Men.

Hugh Jackman as Wolverine

Kevin Feige has said the X-Men are coming, but we’ve only gotten teases of the mutant team a few times since Disney acquired Fox. We got confirmation that Ms. Marvel is a mutant, She-Hulk made a meta-joke about introducing the X-Men, and we even saw a Professor X variant in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Given Deadpool’s frequent interactions with the X-Men in previous films and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine being a member, it seems likely that Deadpool 3 will either formally introduce the team or they’ll be introduced before then.

This brings us back to Matthew Macfadyen’s role in Deadpool 3. Perhaps the Succession actor will be playing one of the team’s famous mutants. It’s a buzzy casting announcement since Succession just premiered the season opener for its final season.

It’s possible that Macfadyen’s role is minor, but it seems unlikely with the way it was announced. We’ll have to wait and see how things pan out for now. In the meantime, you can look forward to seeing Deadpool 3 when it hits theatres on November 8, 2024.
