The Smart Sci-Fi Time Travel Series That Needs Saving

By Douglas Helm | Published

Continuum

Continuum is an underseen and underrated sci-fi TV series that first premiered in 2012, eventually getting four seasons and ending in 2014. Unfortunately, it’s hard to watch this series anywhere because it isn’t on any streaming services. Streaming services are always a great way to bring a new audience to an older show, so it would be nice to see this one pop up somewhere.

Continuum Was On Syfy

Continuum was created by Simon Barry and aired on Showcase in Canada and SyFy in the UK and US. The series begins in the year 2077 where Vancouver has become part of a corporate dystopian police state.

A terrorist group known as Liber8, led by Edouard Kagame, flee execution by traveling back in time, accidentally transporting a City Protective Services (CPS) law enforcement officer named Kiera Cameron with them.

Getting Back To The Future

Continuum follows Kiera as she tries to thwart Liber8’s plans and get back to the future with the help of Vancouver Police Department detective Carlos Fonnegra and a future corporate founder/tech genius named Alec Sadler.

The series has a solid premise that it delivers on, and it’s anchored by a great cast. Rachel Nichols leads the cast as Kiera and is joined by Victor Webster, Erik Knudsen, Stephen Lobo, Roger Cross, Lexa Doig, Tony Amendola, Omari Newton, Luvia Petersen, Jennifer Spence, Brian Markinson, and Ryan Robbins.

Continuum Cut Short

Continuum

Unfortunately, Continuum was cut short before its time, but it did manage to end on its own terms. The show was canceled in the middle of its story but was given the chance to wrap things up with a fourth and final season with a shorter six-episode runtime. Due to this protracted runtime, the story mostly focuses on the main characters Kiera, Alec, Carlos, and former Liber8 member Kellog.

Shorter Ending Better Than No Ending

Continuum

While it’s disappointing that Continuum didn’t get to tell its full story, it’s not every day that a show is given the chance to wrap things up with six more episodes after being canceled.

While it’s not as complete a story as we could have got, it’s better than the show getting canceled on a cliffhanger like so many streaming-era shows do. A shorter ending is better than no ending at all.

Ten Seasons Planned?

Continuum

But it is fun to imagine what Continuum could have been, as Simon Barry said that he had seven to ten seasons planned for the series.

That’s a lot more than the three-and-a-half seasons we got, so what exactly would those seasons focus on?

Apparently, characters like Emily, Julian, and the Traveler would have had much bigger stories, but those plots had to be nixed in favor of focusing on Kiera, Alec, Carlos, and Kellog to provide a satisfying ending.

Continuum Not On Streaming

The Traveler, in particular, got shortchanged by Continuum’s cancellation, as his storyline would have really expanded the mythology of the show.

Also, there were apparently plans of making an entire season that would focus on the backstories of each member of Liber8. While we may never get more episodes of Continuum, it would at least be nice to get the episodes we do have on a streaming service like Netflix
