The Final Girls Support Group is a novel by popular horror author Grady Hendrix. The book was only recently released, becoming available to the public on July 13, 2021. While the novel may be new to audiences, Charlize Theron has already signed up for an adaptation to the project, according to news from Deadline. Denver & Delilah Films, Theron’s production company, has signed on to produce a television series for HBO Max based on the novel.

The series will carry the same title as the book. The Charlize Theron project has already pulled in Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti to produce through Double Dream, and Andy Muschietti is signed on to direct the pilot episode. Andy Muschietti is well known to horror fans for his recent work directing It (2017) and It Chapter Two (2019). Currently, he’s directing The Flash for DC. Already, The Final Girls Support Group has some big talent backing the project.

One of the more popular tropes we’ve seen in horror movies, particularly in the 1980s and 1990s, is the final girl trope. The trope itself is explored in this new horror project from Charlize Theron. Some of our best and most famous Final Girls in films include Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode in Halloween, Nancy Thompson in A Nightmare on Elm Street, and Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott in Scream. We love watching these characters survive the odds so much that many of them do it again and again, turning their survivor stories into franchises. Scream first came out in 1996, but we’re about to see Sidney Prescott face off against a serial killer again in Scream 5 in January 2022. Horror fans cannot get enough.

Now, in the new project being produced by Charlize Theron, we’re going to see an HBO Max series where six Final Girls. Based in Los Angeles, these six main characters have all survived being attacked by serial killers. In the fictional story, the author says that they’re the inspiration for the slasher movies. Naturally, a group of six Final Girls becomes a target for a new serial killer.

At this point, the HBO Max project has its producers and a director fr the pilot. Grady Hendrix, the author of the novel, is also signed on to executive producer, which is a great sign that the series will stay true to the novel’s content. However, it’s still early days, and no actresses have been signed. It’s unknown if Charlize Theron herself will be signing on for a part in the series. Hopefully, she’ll consider it.

While the Oscar winner is known to be more of a movie star than a television star, or streaming star as the case may be, many actors previously known for only performing on the big screen have been in streaming projects recently. Her movie, The Old Guard, was a Netflix film. Perhaps she’ll consider signing on for the series? With six final groups, and probably a therapist or two guiding them through their trauma, there are probably a lot of possible parts Charlize Theron could bring her talents to. Of course, as big a star as she is, Theron may take some of the spotlight away and that could be a concern that keeps her from acting in the series. It’ll be a while before this one hits our screens yet, so we’ll be watching for more news as it becomes available.
