DC might be rethinking their entire strategy when it comes to most of the films in their lineup. The Snyderverse is now a thing of the past, and with that, it might be time to shake things up for the comic-based company. One such way is to bring in more underground and fan-favorite heroes from the comics. One of those heroes is none other than Blue Beetle. Casual fans of the DC continuity might not be as familiar with this hero, but diehards will certainly know this character. While there have been only slivers of updates about this upcoming DC venture, we finally got our first look at the upcoming film, via lettering on the back of a chair from the set. You can see the photo below:

While lettering might not be the most exciting update, it does offer a bit about the time frame in which the film might take place. There is a clear 1990s motif with how this logo has been made, so it could mean that Blue Beetle could start in that decade. Although the character has had three iterations, it is the third version of the character that the movie will be revolved around. Xolo Maridueña, of Cobra Kai fame, is set to take on the role of Jaime Reyes. Reyes is the third-generation version of Blue Beetle that discovered the sacred scarab actually turns into a battle suit. That, and the Reyes version of the character can time travel. We may be looking at in instance of Captain Marvel, as that film also took place in the 1990s. Reyes might start in the 90s but have to time travel to the present time for some reason. This would also make sense due to the multiverse being established for DC.

Maridueña is said to have already had two fittings with the Blue Beetle suit and claims that he hopes he can get more buff before they begin to seriously film. Concept art for the suit was released during the DC FanDome event last year, though things could have creatively changed since it was shown. Also, it is concept art, so the final suit may have had some tweaks. It will certainly be exciting to see what DC has in store for this character. Hopefully, the aim is to be more like Shazam! which seemingly was more well-received than the more recent DC films. DC needs a revival of sorts, and this film could be just the one to steer things in a much better direction.

Blue Beetle is set to debut on August 18th, 2023. Maridueña will be joined by Susan Sarandon, Raoul Max Trujillo, Harvey Guillen, and George Lopez among many others. The film will be the first time in which a Latino superhero will take center stage for DC. This film could usher in a new wave of more happy-go-lucky superhero films that might be exactly what DC needs. The dark and brooding Snyder style is clearly no longer working. The Batman aside, DC needs a new way of thinking.
