Billy Dee Williams Confirms Lando And Han’s Secret Relationship
Billy Dee Williams just made everyone who ships HanLando very happy. The Batman actor recently appeared on Michael Rosenbaum’s Inside Of You podcast, where he made a shocking revelation about the nature of Han Solo and Lando Calrissian’s relationship. According to Williams, the two Star Wars rogues “were lovers.”
Wearing Hans’ Clothes
The statement was made in response to Rosenbaum’s question about Lando’s attire at the end of The Empire Strikes Back.
If you didn’t know, Lando is wearing Han’s clothes at the end of the film—as in the exact same outfit Han normally wears, vest and all.
This weird situation has had fans scratching their heads for decades and was even called out directly by Seth McFarlane in his Family Guy Empire Strikes Back spoof Something, Something, Dark Side.
So it’s not exactly out of line for Rosenbaum to ask Billy Dee Williams directly whether or not he found the wardrobe change weird. The actor’s answer, on the other hand, was rather unexpected. “No,” Williams said with a smirk. “They were lovers.”
Made In Jest?
The comment was most likely made in jest and the way both men chuckled after Williams dropped his bombshell would certainly support that theory.
On the other hand, it’s not the first time Billy Dee Williams has hinted at Han and Lando being more than friends. At Wizard World Sacramento Comic Con 2014, the actor was also asked about wearing Han’s clothes at the end of Empire.
“Well,” said Williams, “they were an item.”
Not That Farfetched
While Billy Dee Williams’ comments don’t canonize Han and Lando as lovers, they certainly don’t hurt the theory.
On the contrary, Star Wars shippers are probably already using the newest quote to support their headcanons.
After all, with Lando now officially identified as pansexual, the idea of him being intimate with Han Solo isn’t as farfetched as it once was.
HanLando
It should come as no surprise to anyone on the internet that Han Solo and Lando Calrissian are one of the most popular pairings when it comes to Star Wars fanfiction.
The most common name for the couple is HanLando, but sometimes fans use Hando or Solorissian when referring to the two characters as lovers.
Since as early as the late ’90s, people have been writing slash fiction about HanLando—even before there were sites on the internet to post it.
Solo Helped With The Theory
The release of Solo (2018) and Donald Glover’s droid-loving portrayal of a Lando who’s up for anything only served to increase the number of Solorissian shippers.
Billy Dee Williams originally wasn’t too keen on the idea of Lando being pansexual, but his recent comments would seem to signal a change of heart. After all, in a galaxy with millions of species, it would be weird to limit one’s attraction to one set of human sexual reproductive organs.
Will Upset Some
The actor’s revelation about Han and Lando is sure to upset a certain group of Star Wars “fans” who don’t enjoy when the franchise makes any attempt to grow.
Those particular fans are usually the same ones who will call Luke Skywalker in The Last Jedi “Jake Skywalker” based on a single interview with Mark Hamill, so it will be interesting to see if they take Billy Dee Williams’ words as gospel the same way they did Hamill’s.
Now, the only question is whether the duo were in a throuple with Leia.
