Harrison Ford Is Officially A Go For Blade Runner 2, This Oscar Nominee May Direct

Blade RunnerThere have been rumblings of Blade Runner 2 for years, but it hasn’t been until recently that things really got rolling on the long gestating sequel. That’s not to say it’s been a smooth ride. Ridley Scott, busy with The Martian and Prometheus 2, among other projects, said he wasn’t going to direct. And though star Harrison Ford has appeared enthusiastic, there’s always been the caveat of the script has to be write and it has to fit into his schedule. Now, however, the production has not only secured its star, but has also scored a potential coup, landing Academy Award nominated director Denis Villeneuve.

This isn’t even just some rumor that someone heard from one of their unnamed sources who overheard this tidbit at lunch. The news comes in the form of a press release, and while Ford is firmly in place, Villeneuve is not 100% on board yet, though he is apparently deep in negotiations and more or less concrete. They’re at least sure enough that he’ll sign on that they put out a press release.

This Star Wars: The Force Awakens Spoiler Is Huge For One Key Character

Star WarsAt this point, what would a day talking about sci-fi be without a potential spoiler for Star Wars: The Force Awakens? That would probably be a day we slept through, or maybe the day the internet finally breaks. But today is not that day, so there is the obligatory potential SPOILER, and it’s a doozy, like, maybe you don’t necessarily want to read this one.

Seriously, there are SPOILERS beyond this point, like the kind we feel a little bit bad about posting. But you’re grownups and can make your own decision.

Harrison Ford Thinks Blade Runner 2 Is The Best Thing He’s Ever Read

Blade RunnerThe idea of Blade Runner 2 is a tricky proposition for most of us, especially happening 30 plus years down the road. It sounds exciting at first, like, “Ooh, more Blade Runner,” but when we start to actually think about what that means all the creeping fears and concerns materialize, and we worry that it will be terrible and taint the legacy of the first film. There’s a script for Blade Runner 2, and apparently at least one key player, Harrison Ford, thinks it’s pretty awesome.

Pumping his latest film, the biblical epic Exodus: Gods and Kings, Ridley Scott stopped to talk to MTV, and as happens rather frequently, the subject of Blade Runner 2 came up. (So did Prometheus 2, which we’ll get to as well.) Scott confirmed that the screenplay is ready to go, but also reiterated that he’s not going to direct. (Honestly, after watching Exodus, which is a jumbled mess of a movie, and more than anything boring as all hell, this bit of news doesn’t bum me out as much as it did a couple of weeks ago.)

Blade Runner 2 Will Have Much Less Ridley Scott And Harrison Ford Than You Expect

Blade RunnerMost, if not all of us have trouble with the idea of Blade Runner 2 happening. It’s been more than 30 years since Ridley Scott delivered one of the greatest sci-fi films of all time, and sequels that happen this far after the fact, well, lets just say they can be hit and miss. Still, it’s been in the works for years, especially the last few, and it is expected to shoot in 2015, but we just received word that two major parts may not play as major a role as we expected, as Scott and star Harrison Ford’s level of involvement just took a drastic nosedive.

Scott is on the publicity trail, stumping for his upcoming biblical epic, Exodus: Gods and Kings, and talking to Variety the subject of Blade Runner 2 came up. That is where he said he won’t direct the film. Though this is hardly surprising—with movies like The Martian, which is scheduled to begin filming later this year, and Prometheus 2 on the horizon, he’s going to be busy—it’s difficult to imagine anyone but Scott at the helm of a Blade Runner movie. Though James Cameron directed Aliens, the sequel to Scott’s 1979 classic Alien, and that turned out pretty well, so who knows.

Han SoloIt’s no secret that Han Solo and Harrison Ford are both back for J.J. AbramsStar Wars: Episode VII. That’s about all we know for sure (except for that whole broken leg thing), but at least it’s something. We’ve heard rumors and unofficial reports about what he might be up to, but that’s all it is at this point. Still, if this latest bit of information has any truth to it, it could be a fun little nod to longtime fans of the franchise.

This may stray into SPOILER territory, so read on if you dare. It’s not huge, but you’ve been warned.
