This weekend’s SAG Awards got off to a bad start when several A-listers, including comedy legend Bill Murray, got stuck outside the venue. According to Page Six, the reason for the wait was that the Fire Marshal was blocking the entry. What actually transpired to merit this interruption is unknown, but what is known is that some people were very upset on the embattled actor’s behalf. Ramin Setoodeh, co-editor-in-chief of Variety, said on Twitter: “Even Bill Murray has to wait. This is madness!”

A short video posted by Page Six shows Bill Murray and numerous other actors and other personnel milling around as they wait to be let into the SAG Awards. Rooney Mara and Claire Foy from Women Talking were caught up in the bottleneck as well, even though both of them were nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. It just goes to show you, it doesn’t matter how famous or important you are – you still have to follow the Fire Marshal’s rules.

Bill Murray had already walked the red carpet before he got caught up in all this congestion, and he was looking polished in a black suit with a multicolored tie over a crisp white shirt. Rooney Mara, too, wore all black and white, although her gown was sheer and featured a large bird design. Claire Foy, on the other hand, brought a pop of color to the line of waiting actors in a yellow dress by Prada with a plunging neckline.

While all the pre-show chaos may have been new to him, Bill Murray is no stranger to the SAG Awards. He was last nominated in 2016, when he got the nod for Outstanding Actor in a Miniseries or Television Movie for A Very Murray Christmas. He was also nominated for Outstanding Actor in a Lead Role for Lost in Translation in 2004 and Outstanding Cast in a Motion Picture for The Grand Budapest Hotel in 2015.

According to People magazine, Bill Murray attended the 2023 SAG Awards with Jeannie Berlin, who plays Hadassah Fableman in The Fablemans. Last year, Murray made a tribute to Berlin’s late mother at the 12th Governors Awards, where he called her “one of the greatest minds to ever walk this country.”

Bill Murray most recently showed up on screen in 2022’s The Greatest Beer Run Ever with Zac Efron and of course had a role in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. His career has been in a bit of a tumultuous state since April of last year, however, when he was accused of misconduct on the set of Being Mortal, a film directed by Aziz Ansari. The incident caused such a commotion that production on the film was completely shut down for good.

According to Bill Murray, though, it was all a misunderstanding. He said that he “did something I thought was funny, and it wasn’t taken that way.”

Regardless of his past alleged transgressions, the Groundhog Day star’s being kept out of the SAG Awards was not based on any fault of his own. It was a matter of safety, and luckily things were resolved and Bill Murray was able to enjoy the event once he finally made it inside.
