Angelina Jolie, for all of her accomplishments and movie resume, has yet to take the total comic book movie route. Sure, a few of her roles butted up against the genre but she’s never really taken a true role in these movies. That’s set to change soon with Jolie about to star in the upcoming Eternals film. And we got a chance to catch our first glimpse of the actress as part of the group. Check it out:
Angelina Jolie’s character is third from the left in this grouping. Here’s a close-up…
She’ll be playing Thena, a warrior with a number of badass abilities. Besides just the super strength and speed piece (yawn), Thena can also generate cosmic energy and use it to form different types of weapons. She can also use the same ability to blast rays from her eyes or hands. She’s incredibly powerful and Jolie looks perfect in the role.
Eternals, based on the comic book series of the same name, is about a group of sentient creatures who are offshoots of humans but with considerably more powers. They live in a different world and tend to operate mostly outside of the traditional Marvel Universe. There have been crossover stories in the past, but for the most part, they’ve developed insular story arcs. Angelina Jolie’s Thena is a good example of why. The characters would dust the typical Marvel Cinematic Universe group in terms of sheer force. We may eventually see them work into different stories but they are likely to involve things happening way off-planet. But this movie will have some living on Earth and experiencing a fallout from the events with Thanos.
Joining Angelina Jolie in this picture and the rest of the cast is an all-star and diverse group of folks. Front and center is Nick Madden who will play the team’s leader Ikaris. On his left is Gemma Chan as Sersi. Next to her is Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos and then, of course Salam Hayek who’ll play Ajak. On either side of Jolie is Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo and Don Lee as Gilgamesh. The group totals ten in all.
Eternals is set to be part of Marvel’s Phase Four which just kicked off with Disney+’s WandaVision. The film has seen major setbacks though. It originally was slated to hit theaters in November of last year, but pandemic-related closings. But that timing was pushed back almost a year and won’t be released until November 2021. So while the picture looks cool, it will be some time until we catch Angelina Jolie on screen in her new getup.
While we wait for this film, we can next catch Angelina Jolie in Taylor Sheridan’s Those Who Wish Me Dead which will hit theaters and HBO Max later this year. In it, she’ll play a survival expert who’s working to protect a murder witness from a couple of assassins. It should be a high octane film, the perfect set up for when we see Jolie as Thena.
