Every few years, Adam Sandler surprises with a film that is completely unlike his usual comedies. He first showed his range and depth with 2002’s Punch-Drunk Love, then with films like Funny People, and The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected). But one of the biggest shocks in his career came from his appearance in 2019’s Uncut Gems, which cast Sandler as New York City jeweler Howard Ratner who can’t quit making high-stakes bets. But a new rumor suggests that Sandler himself might be making another big bet, this time working on a horror film.
The rumor comes from We Got This Covered, which says that Adam Sandler is supposedly in talks to star in a film called Dream Scenario, which will be produced by Hereditary and Midsommar director Ari Aster, likely through his production partnership, Square Peg. Dream Scenario is about a university professor who appears in people’s dreams throughout the world. At first, he uses this for fame, but then stops when things become sinister.
While the combination of Adam Sandler and Ari Aster sounds promising, Aster is only set to produce, and it’s not clear who is the writer or director behind this project. Frankly, beyond this rumor, there doesn’t seem to be any information about this supposedly upcoming project anywhere on the Internet, so don’t hold your breath for Sandler’s first foray into horror just yet.
Adam Sandler has talked quite often about how much he enjoyed working with Uncut Gems directors Joshua and Benny Safdie, and the brothers have said they are close friends with Ari Aster, so it seems like there could be some truth to this rumor. As for Aster, his next film is Beau Is Afraid, which Aster has called a “four-hour nightmare comedy.” The film is based on a six-minute short, with Joaquin Phoenix in talks to star.
But it does seem like his experience with Uncut Gems has made Adam Sandler interested in doing more than just silly comedies. As of right now, Sandler’s next project looks to be Hustle for Netflix. The film is produced by LeBron James and follows a former basketball recruiter as he tries to restart his career by bringing an overseas player to the NBA. The film also stars Queen Latifah, Robert Duvall, and Ben Foster.
Beyond this, Adam Sandler will also star in Spaceman of Bohemia, which places Sandler as an astronaut dealing with isolation, the possible destruction of his marriage, as well as depression and alcohol addiction while alone in space. In addition to this, the astronaut starts to question his own mental health, believing he might have made contact with a space alien. Like Uncut Gems, Spaceman of Bohemia sounds like an opportunity for Sandler to be humorous, but also stretch his comedic abilities.
Adam Sandler would make an interesting choice for a horror film, especially one produced by Ari Aster, and it seems like Sandler is playing with his charming, kind attitude with his latest films. Uncut Gems showed that Sandler can cause tension in a role, and a horror film would be a great next step for him as an actor.
