Sony’s chairman, Tom Rothman, was recently interviewed about how the company plans to keep pace with all the other media giants in the world. Mainly, the discussion falls on if Sony can keep competing in the game without having a discernible plan to create some sort of streaming service. However, he claims that the company is doing just fine based on the properties they still have the rights to. One of those happens to be the highly successful Spider-Man franchise. Even though Sony and Marvel have teamed up to create those new films, those rights still fall back to Sony. He was also asked the big question about if Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Jon Watts would return for the next installment. According to Rothman, “There are the Spider-Man movies, and we’re currently at work on two Spider-Verse sequels to our Oscar-winning animated movie, with Lord and Miller. We hope to get working on the next Spider-Man movie.”

He was also asked if the whole group was being considered to return for Spider-Man 4, to which he replied “That whole group, we hope.” That group refers to the core elements of the new iterations of Spider-Man, which is Zendaya as Mary Jane, Tom Holland as Spider-Man, and Jon Watts directing again. Watts was instrumental in bringing the clear-cut ambition of this new Spiderverse into one of the most successful runs that Marvel has ever seen. The Tom Holland-led Spidey adventures have grossed close to $4 billion collectively. Those are some massive gains for a set of three films. To put that in perspective, the entire Fast & Furious franchise with its 10 films has grossed $6.6 billion. Bottom line, Spider-Man has been massively successful.

Tom Holland has spoken publicly about his want to move on from the character and also has voiced the want to see either Spider-Gwen or Miles Morales get their turns on the big screen. That is certainly not out of the realm of possibility considering both those characters are the main protagonists for the Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse films that are now being turned into their own budding franchise. One of which Rothman mentioned previously. Even though Holland wants to move from playing a character he has been portraying for quite some time now, he has arguably been the best version of Peter Parker, and the Web-Head.

Spider-Man: No Way Home did change things up as Peter Parker had Doctor Strange enact a spell that wiped everyone’s memory of him being Spider-Man, which could mean another character is meant to make their debut. It would just be a shame to see Tom Holland move on from the character. He has clearly been one of the most favored considering how successful the movies have been.

Spider-Man could go through a drastic change considering how strong the multiverse is right now. Tom Holland might just disappear and be replaced by the fan-favorite Andrew Garfield, or someone new altogether. Right now, it seems that Tom Rothman is alluding to the fact that Holland, Zendaya, and Jon Watts will be asked to return for a fourth installment. We certainly hope that’s true because there still needs to be a showdown between Holland and Venom.
