The First Standalone Star Wars Film Just Hired This Writer To Replace Gary Whitta

fb share tweet share

Star WarsThere’s been so much focus lately on J.J. Abrams’ upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens that it’s easy to forget that there’s a ton of other stuff going on in that neck of the woods. As part of the massive Star Wars remodel, next up in the production line is the Gareth Edwards-directed spinoff movie. Late last week we learned that Gary Whitta, who had been handling all the writing duties, left to pursue other opportunities. Though he finished a draft, there’s still a great deal of work to be done, and now it looks like they may have found a replacement in the form of Simon Kinberg.

According to Slashfilm’s sources, Kinberg is stepping in to pick up where Whitta left off. This report is unconfirmed and unofficial at this point, but not only does this sound like a good idea, it sounds like an obvious choice. Whitta’s biggest jobs up to now have been After Earth and The Book of Eli, neither of which exactly light you on fire with their scripts. And Kinberg is already entrenched in the Lucasfilm family, running the show over at Star Wars Rebels. He’s also a consultant on The Force Awakens, and swooping in at the last moment to save films is kind of his jam in Hollywood. It’s even been reported that he was already working on one of the standalone films, though it was rumored to the Josh Trank-directed one (Kinberg also worked on Trank’s Fantastic Four). If this winds up being true, it won’t blow any minds, but maybe now he’s writing two spinoffs.

The First Standalone Star Wars Movie Just Lost This Key Piece

Boba FettWith all of the moving parts and pieces in the massive expansion of the Star Wars universe, there are bound to be shifts and changes. Screenwriter Michael Arndt very publicly left Star Wars: The Force Awakens due to creative differences—J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan took over in the aftermath and performed substantial rewrites. And now there has been another writer departure as Gary Whitta has left the first standalone spinoff.

First reported by The Hollywood Reporter, this separation definitely appears to be more amicable than the previous split. Whitta was working on the first of the planned side movies with Godzilla director Gareth Edwards, and even completed a draft. With his leaving, however, they will likely bring in another new writer.

See The Millennium Falcon’s First Close-Up Shot From The Force Awakens

Part of the draw in watching tentpole flicks like the Fast & Furious franchise or James Bond and Batman films, is seeing how much more ridiculous and advanced the vehicles get in each successive feature. Star Wars fans, however, are much more likely to get excited when things stay almost exactly the same as they were. Exhibit A: The first close-up shot of the “new” Millennium Falcon for J.J. Abrams Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Bow down to its retro-future beauty.

Chris Pratt And A Velociraptor Get Up Close And Personal In This Jurassic World Photo

Chris Pratt faced off with a fair number of weird ass creatures in Marvel’s space adventure Guardians of the Galaxy, which just hit Blu-ray if you’re looking for something to do tonight. Next summer, after he’s done taking care of the beasts in Pawnee, Indiana on Parks and Recreation, he’s taking on a foe that’s been extinct for millions of years. The newly minted mega star takes the lead in Jurassic World, the next film in the Jurassic Park franchise, and though we’ve seen him riding a motorcycle in the midst of a swarm of dinosaurs, it’s nowhere near as up close and personal as in this new photo from the film.

Mark Hamill Talks Beards, Practical FX, And His Absence From The Force Awakens Trailer

HamillAs cool as it must be to be in a Star Wars, to be part of something so many people love and revere, the flip side is that no matter what you do, especially if you’re one of the key players, you’re always going to have to fend off related questions. Small price to pay, but still, after a few decades, it probably gets old. Such is the case with Mark Hamill when he sat down with Yahoo to talk about his role in an upcoming Elf musical special. We don’t care a whit about that, but lucky for us, Hamill is always game to talk about that far, far away galaxy, and discussed his experience on Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Star Wars Reveals Yet Another Crazy New Lightsaber

Star WarsThat cross-shaped lightsaber we first spied in the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer has caused quite a ruckus, sparking way more controversy than you might expect from a fictional weapon. Then again, this is Star Wars we’re talking about, so nothing should really surprise you. The design has been torn apart in a variety of ways, but it’s also been very publicly defended by Stephen Colbert, so there’s that. But this isn’t the only new lightsaber being introduced into the ever-expanding galaxy far, far away. Burgeoning Jedi Knight Ezra Bridger from the animated series Star Wars Rebels is also getting his own custom weapon, which is even crazier than the last one.

This new lightsaber has a special design and multiple uses. There were a great deal of quips about the last one being a Swiss Army saber, but that’s nothing next to this one, which isn’t just a sword, it’s also a blaster. That is certainly going to ruffle a few feathers.
