Jason Momoa is easily one of the most recognizable actors working today. Standing at 6’4″, the Hawaiian native is no stranger to playing a variety of heroic characters that have included Jason Ioane in TV’s Baywatch, to the more familiar DC comic book superhero in the blockbuster Aquaman. However, it may come as a surprise to many of Momoa’s fans that before he hit it big on the HBO series Game of Thrones, Momoa could be seen for several seasons on Stargate: Atlantis.

A recent trip down IMDB lane helped make the discovery that Jason Momoa portrayed the Satedan character of Ronon Dex in the successful science -fiction drama. According to the Wikipedia page on the biography of the character, Ronon Dex joined the crew of the Atlantic Expedition after becoming a Runner when his civilization had been destroyed. He joined the cast basically to replace the outgoing character of Lt. Aiden Ford, played by Rainbow Sun Francks.

Becoming a fixture of an existing series didn’t appear to be a challenge for Jason Momoa it seems. As in this scene from Stargate: Atlantis, Momoa can be seen donning his now-famous dreadlocks and providing much-needed male bonding time with fellow Atlantis member, Lt. Colonel John Sheppard. In a conversation with Gate World in 2006, Momoa even joked about how many of the cast and crew of Stargate: Atlantis thought that his character of Ronon Dex was the Chewbacca of the Stargate world. Chewbacca, for many fans of the original Star Wars trilogy, is known to be the sidekick of sorts to franchise hero Han Solo, played by Harrison Ford.

Stargate: Atlantis ran for five seasons on the Syfy network from 2004 to 2009. Created by Robert C. Cooper and Brad Wright, it starred Joe Flanigan, Rachel Luttrell, and David Hewlett as a spin-off series of the popular Stargate franchise of the time. Beginning with the 1994 film Stargate, several shows were spun-off such as Stargate: SG-1 and Stargate Universe. Joining in the second season, Jason Momoa found a comfortable spot in science fiction as one of the series’s protagonists before heading to HBO where he solidified his sex symbol status with his portrayal of Kahl Drogo in the fantasy drama Game of Thrones.

These days, one would be hard-pressed to not know who Jason Momoa is. After his debut at the beginning of Game of Thrones, Momoa found continued fame and success playing Declan Harp on the historical drama Frontier, which ran from 2016 to 2018 on the Discovery Channel. Globally recognized for his film work in Aquaman, Momoa came back to his television and science fiction roots with his starring role as Baba Voss in See for Apple+. In 2021, he was featured in the much-talked-about Denis Villeneuve epic Dune and will soon star yet again as Arthur Curry with Amber Heard in 2023’s Aquaman and the Last Kingdom. If you’d like to catch Jason Momoa in some of his earlier work, all five seasons of Stargate: Atlantis is currently available on Hulu.
