Everything Wrong With Green Lantern In Six Minutes Or Less

Do you remember the summer of 2011? Marvel released two superhero movies — Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger — that led into The Avengers the following year, J.J. Abrams paid homage to Steven Spielberg in Super 8, and Rupert Wyatt released the surprise hit Rise of the Planet of the Apes. And then there was the lackluster and under-performing Green Lantern starring Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Mark Strong, and Peter Sarsgaard. While the film was very anticipated at the time, audiences and fans of Green Lantern were disappointed with such a middling representation of the original comic book.

The movie didn’t seem to know if it wanted to be a comedy or an action thriller, borrowing heavily from other successful comic book movies like Superman, Iron Man, and Spider-Man. The people at CinemaSins have released a new video illustrating “Everything Wrong With Green Lantern In 6 Minutes or Less.” The best comment from the video is that Hal Jordan is the Van Wilder of test pilots.

While Green Lantern was a colossal misfire for Warner Bros., DC Comics, and director Martin Campbell (Casino Royale), it slammed the breaks on development of other movies based on the DC catalog. They’re hoping Man of Steel will right that ship this next month, hopefully launching a DC movie universe that will lead to Justice League.

Speaking of Marvel, if their cosmic superhero movie Guardians of the Galaxy fails to connect with general audiences and longtime fans, it might be become Marvel’s answer to Green Lantern. Maybe director James Gunn should take a look at this video so he doesn’t make the same mistakes with Guardians of the Galaxy.

CinemaSins has a pretty successful video series on their hands. They have made some very funny videos in their “Everything Wrong” series, pointing out all of the faults of beloved (and not-so-beloved) movies including Jurassic Park, Battleship, and Transformers.
