Extraterrestrial Trailer Gets Its Horror In Your Sci-Fi

Don’t confuse the Vicious Brothers (Grave Encounters) upcoming alien invasion film Extraterrestrial with Nacho Vigalondo’s alien invasion film Extraterrestrial from a few years ago. In reality, either one of these films could have come up with a much more interesting, far less generic title and it wouldn’t have hurt our feelings at all. They do, however, appear to be very different films. One has shades of romantic comedy, but if this new trailer for the Vicious Brothers version is any indication, there’s not going to be much of either romance or comedy in their film.
This Extraterrestrial looks very much like a more horror-centric version of Close Encounters of the Third Kind. In fact, aside from the obvious alien invasion markers, this looks very much like kids-in-the-woods-encounter-a-vicious-monster kind of horror film. And we can get behind that.
You have just about everything you need her. There’s a mysterious wreck, friends going missing (abductions), authority figures who don’t believe your story, and, of course, an aging genre icon who sets aside a few minutes to show up for one scene and impart words of wisdom on the youngsters and unveil key plot elements. In this case it’s the indomitable Michael Ironside (Scanners) talking about a secret treaty between the government and the aliens, and it looks like these kids may have inadvertently started a war. Fucking teens.
The overwrought screams of, “Get in the car!” may give you pause, but what’s a low-budget sci-fi/horror thriller without some questionable emoting from an actress you’ll never see again and who will most likely take her top off? That’s a vital element to movies like this, and with names like the Vicious Brothers, you can rest assured that you’re probably going to see some gratuitous blood and nudity.
Here’s the official synopsis:
The film follows April (Brittany Allen), who is still reeling from her parents’ divorce when she’s dragged back to the vacation cabin she spent fond summers at as a child accompanied by a group of friends. Her trip down memory lane takes a dramatic and terrifying turn when a fireball descends from the sky and explodes in the nearby woods. Lead by her boyfriend (Freddie Stroma), the group ventures out toward the crash site and discovers the remnants of a ship from another planet along with footprints that suggest its alien occupants are still alive. The college friends soon find themselves caught in the middle of something bigger and more terrifying than anything they could ever imagine.
Extraterrestrial gets a limited theatrical run starting on November 21, and given that we’ll be waist deep in end of the year blockbusters and “important” movies fishing for awards glory, maybe some bloody, horrific science-fiction is just what you’ll need as a palate cleanser.
