All the major studios are watching like a hawk, scouring the landscape for the next hot property that will explode like The Hunger Games and make them a butt ton of money. These days the movie rights to every young adult novel series that appears on the scene, and even many that haven’t yet hit bookshelves, are being snatched up and adapted into big time movies. There are a ton of different franchises in various stages, like The Maze Runner, Beautiful Creatures, and Percy Jackson, but one that seems like a frontrunner to follow in Katniss Everdeen’s sizeable footsteps, is Divergent. We’ve been keeping tabs on the adaptation of Veronica Roth’s best-selling series, there have been a few photos here and there, but now we have our first footage of the film, as well as a couple new photos just for kicks.

Summit is going to have a solid presence at San Diego Comic-Con next week, and Divergent is going to play a big role in that. The video from Entertainment Tonight doesn’t tell you a whole lot. You see Shailene Woodley’s character Beatrice “Tris” Prior rolling around, pretending to shoot guns, and Zoe Kravitz says they’re killing it, and that the film is sure to be a hit. These two figure prominently in the new images as well.

Despite the lack of details here, Divergent does have a lot of elements in play that could lead to big time success. There’s a dystopian near future, kids fighting kids, and a strong female protagonist in Tris. When they reach a certain age, kids are segregated into Factions based on their most dominant personality traits. After being tested, it is determined that Tris displays a number of different factors in equal measure, and is thus classified as Divergent. Something about this designation makes her dangerous, and as she pledges a Faction, and falls in love with her teacher, Four (Theo James), she also has to figure out what makes her so unique and troubling.

The Divergent panel goes down on July 18, and the list of cast and crew members include Roth, Woodley, and James, as well as director Neil Burger (Limitless), Miles Teller, Maggie Q, Ansel Elgort, Ben Lamb, Mekhi Phifer, Christian Madsen, and Ben Lloyd-Hughes. Divergent doesn’t open until March 21, 2014, but you can bet we’ll be seeing a pretty steady stream of promo building up as we approach that date.
