If Summit Entertainment has anything to say about it, 2014’s Divergent is going to replicate the massive success of The Hunger Games. It has all the key components: a strong female protagonist, a futuristic dystopian setting, and young, good-looking rebellious types. A new collection of images from the adaptation of Veronica Roth’s best-selling young adult novel, gives you a sneak peek of the action of the film.
The story of Divergent follows Beatrice “Tris” Prior (Shailene Woodley). In her future, the population of Chicago is segregated into factions based on one of five personality types: Amity (peaceful), Abnegation (selfless), Candor (honest), Erudite (intelligences), or Dauntless (brave). When 16-year-old Tris must decide which faction to join, she is classified as Divergent, or having an equal aptitude for multiple classifications. This makes her dangerous, though she is, at first, unsure why. She does ultimately uncover a plot to destroy all Divergents, though that might be a bit spoilery, so ignore that previous sentence.
These images from EW show Tris and her hunky Dauntless boyfriend, Four (Theo James), running, jumping, on patrol, snipering, and training in various capacities. You also get to see a bunch of neck tattoos, some apparent teen angst, and kids in ski masks. Whatever they’re up to, if you need to wear a ski mask, but aren’t skiing, then you’re up to no good. You also get to see Tris crowd surfing. Maybe they go to a dystopian rock concert of some kind, and she lets out some of her pent up anxiety and torment.
In addition to Woodley, whose Tris carries the load of the film, Divergent also stars James, Kate Winslet, Ashley Judd, Mekhi Pfifer, Maggie Q, Zoe Kravitz, Jai Courtney, and Tony Goldwyn. Roth’s book is the first in a trilogy—the kids do love a trilogy—and the film is scheduled to open on March 21, 2014.
