Firefly’s Sean Maher Comes Out Of The Closet

You may not recognize his name, but Sean Maher has been on the sci fi radar for a while now. The actor got his first major push thanks to Joss Whedon, who cast him as Dr. Simon Tam in Firefly. Simon is probably the most underrated character on the show, as he’s not really tough guy. But he was strong and stood up for his family, and what he believed to be right. Now Maher, who currently can be seen on NBC’s Playboy Club, has come out as a gay man.

Maher spoke with Entertainment Weekly about his sexuality. The first thing that came up is that Maher has been with his partner, Paul, for 9 years. They have two children, and what I assume is a happy family. It almost makes me angry that we still live in a society where Maher had to mask his life.

He speaks candidly about the struggle in the early years of his professional career as he dabbled with women, while being an openly gay man to his college friends. There was a sort of schism in Maher’s life between who he was on a set, and who he was with those he loved. I’m happy that Maher can put all of the confusion behind him and move forward as a proud gay man.
