Unless you are one of the few people that realized Taika Waititi starred alongside Ryan Reynolds in Green LanternWhat We Do in the Shadows served as the introduction to the world. The movie premiered in 2014 and is about four vampires navigating the modern-day world from their Staten Island mansion. The cult status of the low-budget mockumentary spawned a TV series launching in 2019. Set to see their fourth season premiere this year, a new name is coming to the FX series in a recurring role.

According to Deadline, former American Idol finalist Anoop Desai signed on to a recurring role in the fourth season of the series. The only information released about the role is that Desai will play an acquaintance of Nandor (Kayvan Novak), hailing from their homeland. If his role is well received, it is possible it could extend beyond season 4, as What We Do in the Shadows has already been renewed for seasons 5 and 6, per TV Line

Desai landing the role on What We Do in the Shadows is the culmination of a long road. It began when he rose to fame in the eighth season of American Idol. He auditioned with Boyz II Men’s “Thank You” and was selected for Hollywood. He was eliminated in the semi-finals with his rendition of “Angel of Mine” by Eternal. In his return as a wild card, his cover of “My Prerogative” by Bobby Brown was strong enough to become the first-ever thirteenth finalist. He seemed to go back and forth between praise and criticism from the judges for the next three weeks. Finally, he found himself in the bottom two or three for four straight weeks before being voted off. He returned for a tour with his fellow top ten finalists before releasing his debut album in 2010.

Desai cut his teeth into acting with a small role in one episode of Billions. Season 5, Episode 6, “The Nordic Model” saw the only appearance of his Dev Satyal. He then got another single episode in Little Voice as Ravi in the episode “I Don’t Know.” In the second season of Russian Doll, Desai got his first repeat role as he appeared as Salim in two installments, “Brain Drain” and “Schrodinger’s Ruth.” His new role as Nandor’s acquaintance in What We Do in the Shadows marks the singer/actor’s first-ever recurring role.

When we last saw the four vampires of Staten Island, Nandor, Guillermo (Harvey Guillen), and Nadja (Natasia Demetriou) had gone their own ways. All the while, Laszlo Cravensworth (Matt Berry) stays behind to raise baby Colin, who climbed out of the chest cavity of the deceased Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch). When they return, the mansion is near total collapse, and they have no money to repair it. Nandor continues his eternal search for love, Nadja opens the hottest nightclub for vampires in the tri-state area, and Laszlo struggles with nature vs. nurture as an adopted father. Desai has the opportunity to display the acting chops (and maybe the singing chops?) to elevate What We Do in the Shadows to all new heights.
