Tom Hanks and Forrest Gump director Robert Zemeckis are teaming up for the new feature film Here. Written by Zemeckis and Eric Roth, the movie is inspired by Richard McGuire’s 2014 graphic novel of the same name. The story chronicles the events of a single room and its past and future occupants. The cast also includes Robin Wright, Paul Bettany, Michelle Dockery, and Kelly Reilly.

Digital De-Aging

The project was announced in January 2023. It was also revealed that Tom Hanks and Robin Wright would be digitally de-aged using technology from AI firm Metaphysic and Hollywood agency CAA. “I’ve always been attracted to technology that helps me to tell a story,” Zemeckis said. “With Here, the film simply wouldn’t work without our actors seamlessly transforming into younger versions of themselves.”

Zemeckis also explained that Metaphysics’ AI tools achieve feats once deemed impossible. By experimenting with various face replacement and de-aging technologies, the company has become a leader in delivering top-tier AI content. Their unmatched expertise makes them the ideal candidate for tackling the intricate challenges of the Tom Hanks film.

Here will receive a three-step platform release starting with its premiere in Los Angeles and New York on November 15, courtesy of TriStar Pictures and Sony Pictures. While Here is based on existing IP, it is described as an original story that follows several families and the special place they inhabit. The movie will visit various generations, capturing the human experience in a tale of love, loss, and laughter. The project marks the reunion of Tom Hanks, Wright, Zemeckis, and Roth three decades after the release of Forrest Gump in 1994.

Forrest Gump

Forrest Gump is based on the 1986 Winston Groom novel of the same name. The film stars Tom Hanks in the titular role, with Robin Wright, Gary Sinise, and Sally Field. It follows the life of Forrest Gump, a kind-hearted and slow-witted man from Alabama, who is an unwitting participant in several defining moments of American history from the 1950s through the 1980s.

The movie was a critical and financial success upon its release. Audiences were drawn to its heartfelt storytelling along with its unique blend of fiction and historical events. Tom Hanks’ performance received widespread acclaim, earning him the Academy Award for Best Actor. The film also won several other Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

While most critics praised the film’s ambitious scope, visual effects, and emotional resonance, some criticized its sentimentality and simplification of complex historical events. But despite its detractors, Forrest Gump was a massive box office success, earning over $677 million worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing films of 1994.
