Sydney Sweeney as Madame Web

With the release of Madame Web, starring Sydney Sweeney and Dakota Johnson, approximately seven months away, fans have been clamoring for any information about the plot. While Sony hasn’t divulged too many details, other than the movie serving as an origin story focusing on the clairvoyant titular hero, some information has made its way onto social media.

According to The Geeky Cast, the story begins when Julia Carpenter meets Cassandra Web. After discovering that she is the next Madame Web, Julia learns that she is responsible for safeguarding the avatar of the Web of Life from an enigmatic serial killer. The baddie is eventually revealed to be Charlotte Witter, Cassandra’s daughter, who wants to seize the avatar’s power for herself.

To defeat Charlotte, Julia must learn to master her abilities while protecting a teenager named Anya Corazón, who happens to be the avatar. To date, Madame Web boasts a stellar cast, including Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb/Madame Web and Sydney Sweeney as Julia Carpenter/Spider-Woman. Vera Farmiga is reportedly in final negotiations for the role of Cassandra.

Sony was previously eyeing Jena Ortega for Anya. However, Isabela Merced has since been signed to the movie leading fans to believe that she will portray the eventual Spider-Girl. Emma Roberts and Adam Scott will reportedly appear as Peter Parker’s mother, Mary, and his uncle Ben Parker. Additionally, Celeste O’Connor, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, and Zosia Mamet have been cast in undisclosed roles.

The studio is also rumored to be courting Scott Eastwood, Moses Ingram, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan for supporting roles. Madame Web is directed by S. J. Clarkson from a script by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama. Development on the project began in September 2019. Dakota Johnson secured her role in the film in early 2022, with Sydney Sweeney landing hers soon after.

Sydney Sweeney plays Julia Carpenter in Madame Web

Principal photography began in July 2022, taking place in Boston and various locations across Massachusetts until September. The production then moved to New York City in October. Filming concluded before the year’s end, ensuring the project was wrapped up. Several behind-the-scene photos gave fans a sneak peek into Madame Web, hinting that it might deviate from the comic book.

Further speculation about Madame Web being different from the source material arose when Dakota Johnson (an actress in her 30s) was cast as the titular character alongside Sydney Sweeney’s Julia Carpenter. In the comics, Madame Web is portrayed as an elderly individual suffering from myasthenia gravis, necessitating her connection to a life-support system resembling a spider web.

Given her advanced age and medical condition, Madame Web never engaged in direct combat with villains. Consequently, sources have emphasized the potential for the project to take a different direction. Insiders suggest that, owing to her psychic and sensory abilities, Madame Web essentially serves as Sony’s interpretation of Doctor Strange.

The set photos, via Boston.com, revealed that the film is set in 2000s New York City as billboards promoting Beyonce’s debut album and advertisements for the latest 3G technology were prevalent. Due to the setting, fans are hoping that Madame Web has some connection to Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man. The movie, starring Sydney Sweeney and Dakota Johnson, is set for release on February 16, 2024.
