Twisted Supernatural Thriller Gets VHS Release

By Robert Scucci | Updated

Last year’s Suitable Flesh is truly leaning into its ’80s aesthetic by having an official VHS release this coming March. The body-swap horror thriller, inspired by H.P. Lovecraft’s “The Thing on the Doorstep,” is the nostalgia trip that you need to take if you miss the raw and visceral cinematography from one of the most iconic decades the horror genre has to offer.

The VHS Release

The VHS version of the Heather Graham-starring film will be released by Witter Entertainment, and there will be two versions: a standard release and one signed by the film’s director, Joe Lynch. But you’ll have to act fast if you want the autographed version, because there will only be 50 signed copies of Suitable Flesh produced. It’s worth noting, however, that both versions will boast a 4:3 aspect ratio, which will make this modern classic more closely resemble a film that was shot on 35mm film.

Suitable Flesh’s Rise To Fame

Despite Suitable Flesh’s limited theatrical release, it became a sleeper hit on streaming and video-on-demand, garnering an 84 percent critical score on Rotten Tomatoes. Finding its home on the horror streaming platform, Shudder, the film quickly became a fan-favorite, and has received universal praise for its modern twist on the fun and oftentimes irreverent horror flicks of past decades. Likened to the type of obscure horror movie that you’d stumble across at a video store and subsequently obsess over, Suitable Flesh is sexy, funny, and downright horrifying in all the right ways.

The Premise Of Suitable Flesh

Suitable Flesh centers on Heather Graham’s Dr. Elizabeth Derby who experiences hell in the form of incantation induced body-swapping at the hands of a mysterious supernatural spirit. Elizabeth meets with a patient named Asa, who claims that his father, Ephraim, sometimes occupies his body. Upon making a house call, she learns that Ephraim has a mysterious book in his possession that allows him to swap bodies with his subjects after muttering the mysterious incantation.

Don’t Expect Freaky Friday

The body-swapping in Suitable Flesh isn’t your typical Freaky Friday kind of narrative either. We don’t just bear witness to a simple back-and-forth body-swap, as Elizabeth briefly occupies Ephraim’s living body, Asa’s body, and more. Ephraim also wastes no time taking over Elizabeth’s body, Asa’s body, and the body of Daniella, Elizabeth’s colleague who is in many ways an innocent bystander.

Suitable Flesh is as disorienting as it is inventive, and will make you question the identities and motives of every single character. Heather Graham, who is not typically known for acting in horror movies, received universal praise for taking on such an ambitious role that’s equal parts creepy and campy. While you can easily enjoy viewing this throwback film as a solo venture, Suitable Flesh is very much a party movie that is ideal to watch in a group setting.

Travel Back To The ’80s

If firing up your VCR, pounding Mountain Dew, and eating microwaved popcorn with your friends while screaming at your TV in disbelief sounds like a perfect way to spend an evening, then the upcoming VHS release will be a worthy addition to your collection. If you start early enough, you might even be able to squeeze in a couple rounds of GoldenEye 007 on your Nintendo 64 to lighten the mood after having your brain melted in half.
