5 Stargate Characters That Deserve Their Own Spin-Off

The Stargate characters that need spin-offs come from every show in the long-running franchise.

Stargate is a long-running, beloved Sci-Fi franchise that, for some reason, never quite received the widespread visibility of the likes of Star WarsStar TrekDr. Who, or Battlestar Galactica. But with Amazon poised to resurrect the 30-year-old property, it’s worth taking a look at some of the series’ best characters that deserve to star in their own spinoff show.

5. Camille Wray (Stargate Universe)

There aren’t many sci-fi series that have a major character who works in HR (unless you count counselor Deanna Troi from Star Trek). As a civilian character who frequently butted heads with the military leadership onboard the starship Destiny, she was something of a thorn in the main cast’s side — but also a strong and capable character who is interesting in her own right. As the Stargate franchise tends to focus on the military perspective, it would be a fun change of pace to focus on the Stargate from a civilian perspective, and besides, any excuse to get Ming-Na Wen more screen time.

4. Dr. Daniel Jackson (Stargate the movie)

Dr. Daniel Jackson is one of the main characters from the original 1994 film Stargate (played by James Spader), who also appeared in the first TV series, Stargate SG-1 (played by Michael Shanks). The nerdy but brave archeologist/linguist who values knowledge over violence has been endearing enough to warrant an appearance in every other Stargate series besides Stargate Infinity.

If Dr. Daniel Jackson has enough appeal to show up everywhere in Stargate, then he certainly has enough appeal to star in his own spinoff. A show focused on Dr. Jackson’s point of view would be a welcome addition to the franchise.

3. Dr. Samantha Carter (Stargate SG-1)

Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping) might not have shown up in the original Stargate film. Still, the theoretical astrophysicist and former Air Force captain has been a compelling enough character to warrant major roles in Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis, along with a small role in Stargate Universe.

Dr. Carter is the sort of character who’s not afraid to use her knowledge to rain down destruction on her enemies, such as when she used a Stargate and a black hole to cause a star to go supernova, destroying an enemy fleet. Her fantastic onscreen presence and no-nonsense attitude would make her a perfect main character in a spin-off series.

2. Teyla Emmagan (Stargate Atlantis)

While Dr. Samantha Carter has already gotten a lot of love in Stargate canon, Teyla Emmagan (Rachel Luttrell) has unfortunately been underutilized. She’s a major character in Stargate Atlantis, but the Athosian warrior hasn’t shown up in any other Stargate series since.

As a character who is not native to Earth, she offers an interesting perspective on the events of the show that shows a fascinating insight into an alien culture. Getting more of her perspective as she explores the wider universe away from the planet Athos would be a welcome use of the character — though, given her current occupation as an Athosian leader, it might be hard to justify that from a character perspective.

1. Ronon Dex (Stargate Atlantis)

The world needs more Jason Momoa. Bringing back Stargate Atlantis‘ Ronon Dex is one great way to do that.

As one of the last survivors from the planet Sateda, Ronon Dex was always something of a wildcard of the Stargate Atlantis crew. While a lot of his character fits the “brave, tribal warrior” archetype, the character had enough nuance and character moments to leave audiences wanting more.

Ronon was a fan favorite who many felt was sadly underutilized in Stargate Atlantis. A show focusing on his exploits would help rectify that.
