Mean Girls was a cultural phenomenon when it was first released in 2004. While the film will likely never get a sequel, it was no surprise when the hit film eventually became a musical. Now, Deadline has given us a sneak peek of who we can expect to see playing in the classic movie’s iconic roles, which include Anogourice Rice, Renee Rapp, Auli’i Cravalho, and Jaquel Spivey.

Long before the film version was announced, the Mean Girls musical was already making waves on Broadway. The play ran for 833 performances, only shutting down when the COVID-19 pandemic forced Broadway to halt performances in March 2022. The musical was nominated for 12 Tony Awards, though it didn’t win any of them. In January 2020, two months before the COVID shutdown put the industry on hold, the film version of the musical was announced.

We now know that the film version of the Mean Girls musical will star Angourie Rice as Cady, the role originally played by Lindsay Lohan in the original 2004 film. As a new student trying to find her way through a high school’s social hierarchy, Cady spent the film finding ways to sabotage the girls in a clique known as the “plastics.” The musical, unsurprisingly, features the same plot but set to song.

Before being cast in the Mean Girls musical, Angourie Rice was known for her role as Betty Brant in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man series. She had also appeared in Honor Society, Ladies in BlackThe Nice Guys, Nowhere Boys: The Book of Shadows, and Walking with Dinosaurs.

Joining Rice in the Mean Girls musical will be Reneé Rapp, playing Regina George, the leader of the Plastics. The deceptive and manipulative Regina is the film’s (and the musical’s) antagonist, using her wiles to undermine and bully other students to boost her own popularity. Rapp is best known for her role as Regina in the stage version of the Mean Girls musical, which premiered in Washington, D.C. in 2017 and opened on Broadway in 2018. The role won Rapp a Jimmy Award for Best Performance by an Actress in 2018.

Auli’i Cravalho, previously known for playing the titular role in the hit animated Disney film Moana, will play the role of Janis Ian in the Mean Girls musical. Janis was a major character in the film, being the first person to become friends with Cady after she arrives at her new school, encourages Cady as she sets out on her mission to sabotage the plastics. However, as the shenanigans spiral out of control, Janis is also the first character to point out that Cady’s actions make her no different from the Plastics themselves.

Rounding out the announced cast is Jaquel Spivey, who will join the Mean Girls musical as Damian, a character who befriends Cady alongside Janis. Unlike the rest of the cast, Spivey’s acting career has been entirely focused on stage performances up until this point. He starred in the Pulitzer-prize-winning musical A Strange Loop just eleven months after graduating from Park Point University — his first professional acting role.
