When people usually think of Lindsay Lohan, they associate the actress with two things: either the issues that she has had in her personal life or Mean Girls. Thankfully, the latter is the one that is mostly associated with her, as the film has become a cultural phenomenon since it debuted in 2004. There is a ton to love about the movie, and it is once again on Netflix and dominating the charts, landing itself in the top 5 for movies on the streaming platform.

Mean Girls is arguably one of the most successful “high school life” films ever written. That might have a lot to do with it being written by Tina Fey. The film still holds an 84% “certified fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Oddly enough, even though the film became a massive cult classic, it has a meager 66% audience rating on the aggregate website. That number is certainly misleading, as Mean Girls might be one of the most quoted movies in the history of cinema. You would be hard-pressed to not see someone posting the Lindsay Lohan quote, “On October 3rd, he asked me what day it was” on that exact date every single year. That is how massively popular this film is, that this quote has carried on in this manner for more than 15 years. The film amassed $130 million in box office numbers against a budget of $17 million, making it a substantial success. A lesser-known or cared-about sequel was developed and released as a TV movie on ABC Family in 2011. The film was then adapted into a musical that landed on Broadway in 2018.

Mean Girls follows Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan), a high school girl who is new at North Shore High School. After spending the past 12 years in Africa, she must not get used to the public school system in America. She meets Janis Ian and Damian Leigh, who are misfits, and speak to Cady about the hierarchy of the school, including the “Plastics.” The Plastics are a group of wealthy but horrible girls that includes Gretchen Wieners (Lacey Chabert), Karen Smith (Amanda Seyfried), and ringleader Regina George (Rachel McAdams). Janis tells Cady that she should infiltrate the Plastics, after the group of girls invite her to sit with them at lunch. Cady buys into the plan after she formulates a crush on Aaron Samuels, who is Regina’s ex-boyfriend. Regina finds out about the crush and tells Cady that she will talk to Aaron for her, but she instead kisses Aaron in front of Cady, reigniting her relationship to spite Cady. Without ruining the rest of the film, you can all go watch it on Netflix, and see why this film has been spoken about as one of the best comedies for over 15 years.

Tina Fey had initially spoken to Lorne Michaels, creator of Saturday Night Live, about a book called Queen Bee and Wannabees. She told Michaels that the book’s story could be turned into a film. This led to Michaels calling Paramount Pictures, and them purchasing the rights to the book, as it was a nonfiction book. However, Fey would go on to write the script for Mean Girls from scratch, borrowing elements from her own high school experiences. She also used real names of friends to name the characters in the movie. For example, Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan) is named after Fey’s former college roommate, Cady Garey. Also, the minor yet memorable character known as Glenn Coco is a real person that works as a film editor in Los Angeles. Glenn was made famous through a line said by Damien, which you can see below:

Mean Girls is chock full of hilarious and nuanced lines that were expertly delivered by Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, and so many of the other ensemble cast members that made this comedy one of the most talked-about since its debut. There is a big reason why the film has been adapted into a musical and is likely to be rebooted at some point in the future. We know you don’t want it to happen, but it will.

Mean Girls is streaming right now on Netflix, and fans of Lindsay Lohan can see why this film became her masterpiece. Well, that’s to say that it is Tina Fey’s masterpiece, but Lohan is fantastic in it. Also, it is a rare time that we get to see Rachel McAdams appear as a villain in a movie.
