As Robert Downey Jr.’s latest movie, Oppenheimer, gets ready to hit theaters, he sat down for an interview with The New York Times to discuss his acting career. The Iron Man star admitted that he is happy to be back working with the “more purist approach to making movies” as opposed to his previous Marvel movies.

As someone who has always rebelled against summer blockbusters and big-budget films that dominate box offices, he is excited to be involved in Christopher Nolan’s dramatic biopic.

Robert Downey Jr. says he’s happy to be back making movies with a more “purist” approach.

By taking on the role of Tony Stark/Iron Man in 2008, Robert Downey Jr. helped pave the way for Marvel movies and the superhero cinematic universe that we know today. But after spending eleven years portraying the superhero, it’s understandable that the 58-year-old actor was ready to hang up the iron suit and get back to his more authentic acting routes.

Growing up as the son of the famous filmmaker Robert Downey Sr., Robert Downey Jr. has a fine appreciation for the craft. His family didn’t feel that classic movies like Gone with the Wind and The Ten Commandments truly represented cinema in its best light.

The three-hour dramatic biopic is coming to theaters on July 21, and it will share the nail-biting true story behind the development of the atomic bomb. Robert Downey Jr. will play the role of Lewis Strauss, a businessman and naval officer who stressed the importance of protecting the United States’ atomic secrets while monitoring the Soviet Union’s atomic advances.

While the Christopher Nolan film will honor the true form of cinema, it doesn’t necessarily mean that Marvel movies are bad films.

One of the main reasons that audiences love Marvel movies is because of the intense action scenes and their ability to create a world we have never seen before. It wasn’t until the recent use of CGI and other special effects that moviegoers could watch Iron Man and Thanos go head-to-head blasting each other with laser beams on a distant planet—and it actually looked real.

He shared that he needed to “work those other muscles” and break out of his usual acting from Marvel movies.

Robert Downey Jr. was able to flex some of his acting skills when portraying Iron Man, making audiences laugh with his witty retorts and cry when they watched him give his life for all of humanity, but it was a different type of cinema then he was used to.

Coming from a background in more dramatic films like Chaplin and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Robert Downey Jr. was excited to work with Christopher Nolan on his new film. He shared that he needed to “work those other muscles” and break out of his usual acting from Marvel movies.

We are anxiously waiting to see how well Robert Downey Jr. and the rest of the cast share the incredible story behind Oppenheimer, and we have a feeling it’s going to be a cinematic masterpiece to remember.
