It’s an unprecedented move. The former star of the Nickelodeon shows Drake and Josh, Drake Bell, has come forward, volunteering a harrowing account of the sexual abuse he suffered at the hands of a dialogue coach, Brian Peck.

Bell detailed his experiences as a 15-year-old actor in the upcoming Investigation Discovery series Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV. The show will reveal the darker aspects of children’s television—mainly focusing on programs airing in the ’90s and early 2000s.

Drake Bell And Brian Peck

Bell’s ordeal began before Drake and Josh when he worked on The Amanda Show, another popular Nickelodeon show running from 1999 to 2002.

It was on this show that Bell first fell victim to Brian Peck, a dialogue coach who also worked on All That and who would later accrue a criminal record for child sexual abuse charges.

Despite his abuse, Bell would achieve widespread fame, especially with the series bearing his own (first) name. But, for over two decades, the actor would silently carry the burden of these traumatic experiences.

Brian Peck Arrested

In August 2003, Peck was arrested on 11 charges stemming from the sexual abuse of a minor, bringing his criminal activities to light. The dialogue coach would enter a no-contest plea for a lewd act with a 14- or 15-year-old and oral copulation with a minor under 16 in 2004.

Brian Peck’s sentence would entail a 16-month prison sentence and a mandate to register as a sex offender.

For his part, Bell would remain utterly anonymous as the minor in Beck’s case for over twenty years.

Quiet On Set

Broad in scope, Quiet on Set does not only focus on Bell’s personal story and the horrors he endured. The documentary also delves into the wider, deeply toxic culture underpinning children’s television in that era.

Mary Robertson and Emma Schwartz directed the series, a project produced by Maxine Productions and Sony Pictures—Nonfiction, in association with Business Insider.

Nickelodeon’s Dan Schneider

Additionally, Quiet on Set relates the experiences of many former child actors and crew members who worked on programs created by Dan Schneider, a well-known (and infamous) figure in Nickelodeon’s history.

Like Brian Peck, Schneider’s tenure at the channel has come to be synonymous with the darker aspects of kid-friendly content production. Indeed, investigations have unearthed that alleged violations and inappropriateness marked the latter’s tenure as a producer and screenwriter at Nickelodeon.

The accusations against him range from mandating sexually suggestive scenes to requiring that young female stars wear revealing outfits.

Dan Schneider Leaves Nickelodeon

Schneider would part ways with Nickelodeon in 2018. However, the organization’s former president of content and production, Russell Hicks, would release a 2022 statement stating that corporate had both “carefully scrutinized” and “approved” the totality of Schneider’s work.

More Stories Emerging

As more stories like that of Bell’s abuse by Brian Peck emerge, Nickelodan faces understandable scrutiny despite once being the household name for kid-friendly entertainment.

Quiet on Set should make for disturbing but important viewing—delivering groundbreaking content and providing a platform for those affected to share their experiences. Many of the series will apparently be speaking out for the first time.

Look out for the series debuting on March 17 and 18 and ensuring a poignant look into the dark side of an industry.
