What if the hottest new Star Wars film wasn’t actually coming from Disney? Recently, Justice League director Zack Snyder gave a sneak preview of his upcoming film Rebel Moon, a movie that centers on a primal premise: farmers who are threatened by an evil empire decide to rise up and fight for what’s theirs. See the behind-the-scenes-look below.

As Deadline reports, Snyder appeared at a fan event in São Paulo to give a closer look at the film, saying “this movie, for me, existed elementally for 20 years” and “I’m getting a chance to tell a story that I’ve been thinking about for quite a while.”

Considering that Luke Skywalker is a farmboy who eventually becomes a hero of the Rebellion against the evil Galactic Empire, it’s not hard to see why Rebel Moon is frequently compared to Star Wars. In fact, while we don’t yet know much about her, Snyder’s new film features a character played by Sofia Boutella who sounds crucial to leading these farmers to victory against the overwhelming might of the Mother World empire.

But before you can point out the surface-level similarities to Skywalker, you should know that Snyder’s film has a kind of galactic road trip element to it that Star Wars is usually lacking.

In the world’s worst attempt at keeping a secret, Snyder revealed what sounds like one of the biggest plot elements in Rebel Moon. “I don’t want to give it all away,” the director said, “but if they had decided to fight…they would have to travel around the galaxy to find warriors to fight with them. And so, it had us traveling quite a bit.”

In many ways, it’s this “getting the gang together” aspect of Rebel Moon that we are most excited about. Rather than focus primarily on Boutella’s mysterious stranger, it sounds like this sci-fi film will focus extensively on characters finding the right talent needed to topple their intractable foe.

In that way, you could say the movie was influenced by earlier films ranging from Ocean’s Eleven to the first Avengers film, and this sounds like a natural way to give an ensemble cast the appropriate amount of screen time while also engaging in some organic worldbuilding (something many modern sci-fi epics have been sorely lacking in recent days).

While we don’t yet know what roles they’ll play, we do know that Rebel Moon has a stacked cast of impressive talent. In addition to Boutella, the movie stars Anthony Hopkins, Charlie Hunnam, Ray Fisher, Jena Malone, and many more great actors. Considering how transparent Snyder is that he’s been working on this story for decades, we’re confident that he was just as efficient as his fictional farmers when it came to assembling the right crew to help bring his vision to life.

If you’re excited to see what that vision looks like, you’ll be able to check out Rebel Moon before the year is out. The film is currently set to release on the Netflix streaming service on December 22, which is the perfect time to capture fans who are home for the holidays but who don’t want to fight off crowds at the local theater.

But only time will tell if Snyder recaptures the magic of the original Star Wars or gives us a stinker on the level of The Rise of Skywalker (say it with us: “somehow, Snyder has returned”).
