Netflix Crime Comedy Series Is One Of The Most Beloved Shows In Years

By Douglas Helm | Published

If you love feel-good comedies with great characters like Parks & Recreation or New Girl, then you owe it to yourself to check out Brooklyn Nine-Nine (if you haven’t already). Not only is it one of Andy Samberg’s best projects, but it also features an all-time great comedic performance by the late Andre Braugher, who passed away last year. You can stream the entire series now on Netflix.

Brooklyn 99 Is One Of The Greatest Sitcoms Of All Time

Brooklyn Nine-Nine has a simple enough premise, as it is a workplace comedy that follows a precinct of NYPD detectives and their commanding officers. This simple premise gives it a lot of flexibility for comedic situations and allows the well-written characters to shine. Although it is often mentioned alongside other workplace comedies like The Office and Parks & Recreation, it’s definitely consistently underrated compared to these shows.

Talent Behind The Camera

Of course, the DNA of The Office, Parks & Recreation, and The Good Place are readily obvious since Michael Schur and Dan Goor co-created Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Schur worked on all three of those shows in various roles, including writer, producer, and co-creator. Meanwhile, Goor was a writer, producer, and director of Parks & Recreation.

The Award-Winning Ensemble

These shows especially stand out because of the strong ensemble casts of comedic talent, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s cast is just as good as any comedy series out there. Along with Samberg and Braugher, the cast includes Stephanie Beatriz, Terry Crews, Melissa Fumero, Joe Lo Truglio, Chelsea Peretti, Dirk Blocker, and Joel McKinnon Miller. Plus there’s the endless stream of guest stars that includes Adam Sandler, Nick Offerman, Sterling K Brown, JK Simmons, Kathryn Hahn, Craig Robinson, and so many more.

Andre Braugher’s Best Role

Brooklyn Nine-Nine was even good enough to survive a cancellation. In fact, the show was picked up the very next day by NBC after it was canceled by Fox. Following Fox’s cancellation of the show after the fifth season, the show got three more seasons and was able to end on its own terms. It won various awards throughout its eighth season run, and Andre Braugher was nominated at the Emmys a whopping four times for his performance as Captain Raymond Holt.

Likeable Characters

While Brooklyn Nine-Nine is a comedy series, it has plenty of heart, too, and all of the main characters are genuinely likable with fully fleshed-out lives and ongoing plotlines, particularly the romance between Andy Samberg’s Jake Peralta and Melissa Fumero’s Amy Santiago. Of course, there are also fan-favorite Halloween Heist episodes, which are an annual occurrence in the world of the show and a recurring episode that happens every season for viewers, even if the season started after Halloween.

The Halloween Heists

The Halloween Heist episodes are competitions at the 99th Precinct to determine who is the Ultimate Detective/Genius or the Ultimate Human/Genius in later seasons. Fans may rank the episodes differently, but it’s safe to say that all of the Halloween Heist episodes have something to offer. Plus, who doesn’t love a Halloween episode?

In short, Brooklyn Nine-Nine is the perfect breezy watch if you want a comedy with plenty of laughs and heart. There’s plenty to watch, too, with most of the seasons having over 20 episodes. Make sure to check it out on Netflix.
