The Netflix Action Thriller Franchise Fans Are Absolutely Loving

It’s the last week of the year, with only a few days left for movies to reach the top 10 on Netflix before the calendar starts over. It’s just after Christmas, so it’s no surprise that movies like Holiday in the Vineyards and The Christmas Chronicles: Part Two are amongst the most popular.

It’s also not a surprise that Super Mario Bros., one of the biggest movies of 2023 still reins near the top. But what is a surprise is that two of the movies from the Sniper franchise are snagging top spots on the Netflix Top 10.

The Sniper franchise comprises a collection of action and war movies that kicked off with the 1993 film Sniper.

They’re high up there, too. Sniper: Assassin’s End is holding a spot as the number two most popular feature on Netflix while Sniper: Ultimate Kill comes in at number three. The coveted number one spot goes to Rebel Moon Part One: A Child of Fire, which makes perfect sense as it’s Zack Snyder’s most recent movie and came out earlier this month.

Meanwhile, as much as the streaming platform has tried, Bradley Cooper’s Maestro can’t seem to secure a top spot. Even though the biopic is aiming for some Oscar recognition this year, it seems audiences would much rather watch older direct-to-DVD Sniper movies on Netflix than a drama about a composer and his inclination for infidelity.

Sniper (1993)

Both films run pretty short at a quick 94 minutes, making for the perfect entertainment while holiday festivities are still dying down.

The Sniper franchise comprises a collection of action and war movies that kicked off with the 1993 film Sniper. The storyline revolves around Master Gunnery Sergeant Thomas Beckett (played by Tom Berenger) and Gunnery Sergeant Brandon Beckett (played by Chad Michael Collins).

Both served as Force Reconnaissance Scout Snipers in the United States Marine Corps. The Sniper franchise is made up of 10 movies, and while not all of them are available to stream, Netflix recently acquired several of the series titles.

Sniper: Assassin’s End and Sniper: Ultimate Kill are two of the franchise movies currently available to watch on Netflix. They make up the seventh and eighth entries in the series and were released in 2017 and 2020, directly to video. Both films run pretty short at a quick 94 minutes, making for the perfect entertainment while holiday festivities are still dying down.

Sniper: Assassin’s End

Sniper: Assassin’s End, the second most popular movie on Netflix right now, was directed by Kaare Andrews. The movie stars Chad Michael Collins, Tom Berenger, and Sayaka Akimoto, with a plot that follows Brandon Beckett, a Special Ops Sniper, who finds himself framed as the prime suspect in the assassination of a foreign dignitary just before the signing of a crucial trade agreement with the United States.

In a quest for truth and justice, he teams up with the only person he can rely on: his father, the legendary Sniper Master Gunnery Sgt. Thomas Beckett.

Sniper: Ultimate Kill

Meanwhile, Sniper: Ultimate Kill is the prequel to Assassin’s End and the third most popular film on Netflix at the moment. This installment was directed by Claudio Fäh, and also features Chad Michael Collins and Tom Berenger. Ultimate Kill follows Colombian drug kingpin Jesús Morales as he engages the services of a skilled sniper, known as “El Diablo,” to eliminate all his adversaries, thereby securing greater control over drug smuggling routes into the United States. DEA agent Kate Estrada, along with Master Sergeant Brandon Beckett, are dispatched to Colombia with the mission of stopping “El Diablo” and extraditing Morales.
