Since James Gunn first took on the reigns of the DCU as creative head, fans have been clamoring for any possible casting information. While many fan castings have been made online, Warner Brothers have finally begun to make public announcements regarding what actors have been chosen to bring some of the most iconic comic book characters of all time to life on the big screen.

According to a report from IGN, Nathan Fillion has been cast as a Green Lantern, bringing Guy Gardner to live-action for the first time in Gunn’s upcoming film, Superman Legacy.

Frequent James Gunn collobarator Nathan Fillion is following to the director to the DCU as Guy Gardner, a fan-favorite Green Lantern.

Nathan Fillion’s casting as the Green Lantern comes alongside a pair of other announced characters in the film. Edi Gathegi and Isabela Merced have been cast in the roles of Mister Terrific and Hawkgirl, respectively. While neither of the other announced actors has quite the star power of Nathan Fillion, each of them has been performing at a high level within their careers, with their upcoming DCU accolades set to make them household names.

Edi Gathegi is best known for his work on films such as X-Men: First Class and the Twilight franchise, as well as a seven-episode stint on the hit Fox series House. Before Isabela Merced was cast as Hawkgirl, she had placements in films such as Transformers: The Last Knight, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, and the leading role as the titular explorer in Dora and the Lost City of Gold.

The pair’s inclusion in the upcoming Superman film, alongside Nathan Fillion’s Green Lantern, paints an interesting portrait of what’s to come from the now-rebooted DCU.

It seems as though Superman Legacy will serve not only as a standalone Clark Kent film but as an introduction to the complexly woven cinematic universe that James Gunn has constructed.

Marvel fans have spent decades fan-casting Nathan Fillion as everyone from Wonder Man to The Sentry, now he’s bringing one of DC’s best characters to life.

Gunn has also previously worked with Nathan Fillion before casting him in the Green Lantern role, in cameo appearances for films such as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Slither, and 2021’s The Suicide Squad, which served as Gunn’s first foray into the DC franchise.

Gunn’s affinity for working with a growing circle of repeated actors has been noted, with a number of his Guardians of the Galaxy leads expected to defect from Marvel to DC in Gunn’s wake.

Green Lantern Guy Gardner

Nathan Fillion’s casting as Guy Gardner is also interesting considering the fact that Fillion has voiced another Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, in animated films in the past.

Gardner is a lesser-known recipient of the power ring, who is often described as a hulking and obnoxious hero whose muscle-bound physique makes him as intimidating as he is likable. The character often sports a dorky red bowl cut in his appearances, with insider reports confirming the look as part of Fillion’s expected wardrobe in the DCU.

As news continues to pour in regarding the casting of the DCU, fans have responded with glee. Nathan Fillion has been a fan favorite for a number of hero castings throughout both the MCU and DCU for years, leaving his inclusion as the latest Green Lantern to receive near-unanimous praise. The only question that remains is, who will portray Hal Jordan in the upcoming live-action films?
