The Best Godzilla In Years Has Arrived In A Trailer

By Jason Collins | Updated

Following the massive success of 2014’s Godzilla, as well as its sequel from 2019, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and the titan’s run-in with Kong and Mechagodzilla in Godzilla vs. Kong, the renewed interest in the legendary monster and other Titans skyrocketed to new heights. In spite of all the money to be made from the popular franchise, it appears from the new trailer that Apple TV+’s upcoming series, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, promises to deliver more than just a cheap cash grab.

A new trailer has debuted for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, an Apple TV+ series connected to the Godzilla and King Kong’s Legendary MonsterVerse.

Apple TV+ just released the first teaser trailer for its highly anticipated Godzilla TV series, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. The trailer reveals a narrative that follows members of the organization Monarch as they encounter Godzilla and other Titans over the span of half a century and deal with the world of monsters and buried secretsr. The series is scheduled to premiere on November 17 on Apple TV+.

For those who aren’t really familiar with Legendary’s Monsterverse, Monarch is a major scientific organization that’s specifically created by Legendary Pictures for the purpose of playing a significant role in the Monsterverse. In fact, Monarch was present in all Monsterverse films, starting with 2014’s Godzilla, continuing with 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong.

The upcoming series, which is actually a joint-venture project between Legendary, Safehouse Pictures, and Toho, is set to expand the MonsterVerse beyond feature films.

King Ghidorah was presented as a formidable and destructive force and an antithesis to Godzilla, but its significance in the overall kaiju mythos was left a bit dry compared to other interpretations.

Expanding the MonsterVerse beyond movies with Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is actually quite reasonable; Disney has been doing that with its own franchises for more than a decade now, and they have some of the most successful entertainment franchises in the whole history of entertainment.

While all the previously mentioned cinematic releases have introduced various massive unidentified terrestrial organisms, also known as MUTOs, to the narrative, their exact origins remained unknown to the broader audiences.

For example, King Ghidorah was presented as a formidable and destructive force and an antithesis to Godzilla, but its significance in the overall kaiju mythos was left a bit dry compared to other interpretations. The upcoming Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is actually a fantastic opportunity to provide the MonsterVerse with a broader origin story.

The origin story could significantly benefit the mainline cinematic installments, including the upcoming Godzilla x Kong: New Empire—scheduled to release in 2024—as well as Toho’s own new Godzilla movie, Godzilla: Minus One. The narrative of the latter film takes place around the same time as the formation of the Monarch Unit—which later grew into an entire secret organization that studied kaiju and Titans, including both Godzilla and Kong.

The upcoming Godzilla series stars Kurt Russell, Wyatt Russell, Anna Sawai, Kiersey Clemons, Ren Watabe, Mari Yamamoto, Anders Holm, Joe Tippett, and Elisa Lasowski. Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is scheduled to premiere on November 17 on Apple TV+.
