Mel Gibson Dark Psychological Thriller Takes Netflix By Storm Years After Release

By Douglas Helm | Published

Mel Gibson actually starred in a lot of movies in 2022, and quite a few of them were stinkers. But one of those films, called On the Line, is suddenly getting some unexpected attention on Netflix. The movie reached Netflix’s Top Ten and it’s currently available to stream if you’re looking for a dark thriller to watch.

Mel Gibson As FM Radio Shock Jock

On the Line was written, directed, and produced by Romuald Boulanger and stars Mel Gibson, William Moseley, Paul Spera, Alia Seror O’Neill, Kevin Dillon, Enrique Arce, Nadia Fares, and Nancy Tate. Gibson leads the cast as Elvis Cooney, a Los Angeles shock jock radio host who works for the station KLAT during the midnight slot. Elvis is running the radio show with the new intern, Dylan, and his switchboard operator, Mary when a man named Gary calls and claims to be holding his wife and daughter hostage.

Cat And Mouse Thriller

Gary threatens that he’ll kill Elvis’ family if he doesn’t do as he says, leading to a cat-and-mouse game between the two in the LA radio station. Now, despite the film’s rising star on Netflix right now, it’s probably safe to say that this isn’t one of Mel Gibson’s finer outings. While casting Gibson as a rude shock jock radio host is a fun idea, the film falls pretty flat and has been rated horribly by audiences.

A Fun Movie But Not His Best

That said, just because a movie isn’t great doesn’t mean it can’t be entertaining. If the premise of On the Line seems interesting enough to you, and if you’re a fan of Mel Gibson’s work in general, there are probably worse movies you could check out. Then again, there are plenty of better ones, too; still, it’s interesting to see that this relatively unseen Gibson film is suddenly becoming popular on Netflix, but that’s just the funny nature of the streaming era.

The World Of John Wick

While Mel Gibson starred in a ton of movies in 2022, like On the Line, he took a bit of a step back in 2023, only appearing in two films. He also appeared in the TV series The Continental, a spin-off of the John Wick franchise that explores the origins of the titular assassin hotel in 1970s New York City. Gibson stars as Cormac O’Connor, who runs the Continental during the show’s time period.

A Mel Gibson Fantasy Movie

Mel Gibson seems like he’s taking an even bigger step back from acting in 2024, with the film Boys of Summer being his only project currently slated for release. That film follows a group of boys who team up with a retired detective to take on a witch they suspect has taken up residence in Martha’s Vineyard. That film doesn’t currently have a release date.

Lethal Weapon 5 Is Inevitable

Of course, Mel Gibson is staying plenty busy elsewhere, as he’s directing and starring in the upcoming Lethal Weapon 5 along with directing a sequel to The Passion of the Christ. Those projects are surely going to keep his plate pretty full for the coming years. We’ll have to wait to hear more about those projects, but you can check out On the Line on Netflix in the meantime.
