It is well known that Martin Scorsese is a master of his craft, but does he have the power to bring Daniel Day-Lewis out of retirement? Apparently so!

For the presentation of a National Board of Review Award for Best Director, Martin Scorsese did have the power to bring Daniel Day-Lewis out of retirement. If only for a brief appearance, the two men reminisced about the magic of their work together on The Age of Innocence in 1993 and Gangs of New York in 2002.

Time For One More?

Martin Scorsese joked with Daniel Day-Lewis during his acceptance speech stating that the pair’s two films were some of the greatest experiences of his life and that maybe, just “maybe there’s time for one more”.

Scorsese also spoke about how simply receiving the award from Daniel was an “honor in itself”.

One Of The Great Joys

Speaking about Martin Scorsese, Daniel Day-Lewis said that working with the acclaimed director was “one of the greatest joys” of his life.

While Lewis officially retired from the big screen and the public eye nearly seven years ago in 2017, the award-winning actor felt it necessary to publicly appear at the awards ceremony for one of his most beloved directors.

Whole New Side Of Filmmaking

Lewis spoke to the audience about his discovery of Scorsese as a teenager. Martin Scorsese’s work showed Daniel Day-Lewis a whole new side of filmmaking and “illuminated a vast, beautiful landscape of what is possible in film”.

The honor and opportunity to work with the legendary director was one of the highlights of Lewis’s long and successful career in Hollywood.

Martin Scorsese’s Killer of the Flower Moon took home a slew of prizes from the awards ceremony, even after Daniel Day-Lewis’s presentation. The film took the cake over other titles all night.

Honored

Overall, Killer of the Flower Moon took home Best Film, Best Director, Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography, and Lily Gladstone won Best Actress for the film.

After receiving a Golden Globe award just a few days before the National Board of Review Awards ceremony, Lily Gladstone was somewhat at a loss for words when she first took the mic after Martin Scorsese was surprised by Daniel Day-Lewis’s appearance.

“This isn’t real. This isn’t real”, she repeated. “Daniel Day-Lewis, did that just happen”?

Killers Of The Flower Moon

Coming in second to Martin Scorsese’s  Killers of the Flower Moon (and Daniel Day-Lewis’s surprise appearance) for most awards received was Alexander Pane’s movie The Holdovers with three wins.

Paul Giamatti won Best Actor. Da’Vine Joy Randolph won the award for Best Supporting Actress, and David Hemingson took home the win for Best Original Screenplay.

Daniel Day-Lewis And Others

Michael J. Fox was also present at the awards ceremony to receive an award for his new documentary Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie. The film won the award for Best Documentary, and rightfully so. The documentary explores Fox’s battles and successes living a life on screen while also working his way through life with Parkinson’s Disease.

When talents like Martin Scorsese, Daniel Day-Lewis, Mark Ruffalo, Bradley Cooper, and Michael J. Fox get together, you know you’re going to have a quality evening of entertainment and inspiration, and the night did not disappoint.
