Kristen Stewart is on her press tour for Love Lies Bleeding and she finally said what everyone was thinking about Bella Swan’s relationship with Edward Cullen in the Twilight franchise. Appearing on the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast, host Amanda Hirsch said that Bella was “a little desperate” to be with Edward since she had to “go through” hell to become a vampire. Stewart replied, “Yeah, but, he was trying to sort of control whether or not she made choices for herself,” adding, “I would’ve broken up with him immediately.”

Quit Being A Gatekeeper, Ed

Kristen Stewart continued to elaborate, talking about how Edward Cullen initially didn’t let Bella become a vampire in Twilight, saying “I mean if I was like, ‘Hey, I want to try that,’ and he was like, ‘No, this is just for me,’ I would be like, ‘Well, this is also just for me. My whole life. Without you.”

Team Jacob Is Redeemed

Kristen Stewart’s comment about her Twilight relationship is certainly an opinion that has been long-held by fans, and detractors, of the sparkly vampire franchise. That’s not even mentioning the fact that Edward is over 100 years old when he begins his relationship with the 17-year-old Bella. It’s no secret that Edward is pretty toxic, which is why Team Jacob fans probably felt pretty good about their decision before he decided to “imprint” on Edward and Bella’s baby to marry her in the future.

Twilight’s Creepy, But We Knew That

So yeah, Twilight is a pretty weird franchise, even if you do try to hand-wave the creepier parts away as vampire culture or whatever. Kristen Stewart isn’t even the only Twilight cast member who has questioned her character’s decisions, as Robert Pattinson has hilariously poked at the franchise in the past too. That’s not to say the franchise didn’t have a massive fanbase, as the films did end up raking in over $3.3 billion at the box office when it was all said and done.

Stewart’s Upcoming Projects

After starring in Twilight, both Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson sidestepped the world of franchise blockbusters to pursue indies and more prestigious projects. Stewart’s latest effort is the aforementioned Love Lies Bleeding, which stars Stewart as Lou, a reclusive gym manager who falls in love with a bodybuilder (Katy M. O’Brian). The A24 film, directed and co-written by Rose Glass, was released earlier this month and has been receiving critical acclaim

Based on Kristen Stewart’s upcoming schedule of projects, it seems like she’s going to continue to stay out of blockbusters like Twilight for the time being. Her next film, Sacramento, is set to be a road trip comedy that also stars Michael Angarano, who wrote the screenplay with Chris Smith, Michael Cera, and Maya Erskine. That film doesn’t currently have a release date.

Twilight Plus All The Years

It’s definitely interesting to hear the perspectives of Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and other members of the Twilight franchise cast all these years later. While the movies were far from prestige filmmaking, it’s hard to say they weren’t at least fun to watch. If you want to see Stewart’s latest performance in Love Lies Bleeding, you can catch it in select theaters now.
