Timothy Olyphant in Justified: City Primeval

Fans of the FX series Justified have no doubt enjoyed seeing Timothy Olyphant return as the gunslinging marshal Raylan Givens in City Primeval. But will we get more of Raylan in the future? In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, co-showrunner Michael Dinner indicated that there’s a distinct possibility that the creative team would be willing to come back for another series according to ComicBook.com.

Justified: City Primeval co-showrunner Michael Dinner says there’s a good chance a Season 2 is on the way.

In the interview, Dinner said, “I do think there’s a third chapter, in success, if the audience comes to this,” continuing, “We’re waiting to see how that happens over the next couple weeks, and if FX wants to do another chapter, I think that Tim (Olyphant) would want to do it.”

Dinner also said that he and co-showrunner Dave Adron would be willing to come back. With all those pieces in place, it seems like the only question is whether or not the Justified: City Primeval will be popular enough to warrant another series.

The original Justified followed Timothy Olyphant as US Marshal Raylan Givens, who returns to his home state of Kentucky and faces off with numerous Harlan outlaws throughout the show’s six-season run.

While the original series introduced us to plenty of colorful characters, such as the silver-tongued Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins), the new series leaves them all behind, along with the state of Kentucky. City Primeval picks up ten years later and sees Raylan taking on a case in Detroit.

“I do think there’s a third chapter, in success, if the audience comes to this. We’re waiting to see how that happens over the next couple weeks, and if FX wants to do another chapter, I think that Tim (Olyphant) would want to do it.”

While the locale and cast are new, Justified: City Primeval is already proving itself to be a worthy successor, with the debut two episodes receiving critical praise.

Timothy Olyphant seamlessly slid back into Raylan’s boots and Western hat to bring us a more seasoned and weathered Marshal, and Boyd Holbrook’s Clement Mansell may rank as one of the best baddies in the franchise by the end. He’ll still be behind Margo Martindale’s Mags Bennett and Goggins’ Crowder, but that’s a respectable third place to be in.

Justified: City Primeval

Justified: City Primeval, like the original show, pulls inspiration from the novels by the late Elmore Leonard. Dave Adron and Michael Dinner serve as co-showrunners with a cast that includes Timothy Olyphant, Boyd Holbrook, Aunjanue Ellis, Adelaide Clemens, Vondie Curtis-Hall, Norbert Leo, Butz, Marin Ireland, Victor Williams, and Olyphant’s daughter Vivian Olyphant as Raylan’s daughter Willa.

The series airs new episodes on Tuesdays on FX and then makes them available for streaming on Hulu.

While it’s not required to watch the original series before Justified: City Primeval, it’s well worth taking the time. City Primeval may be a relatively self-contained story, but it’s enriched by understanding who Raylan is and what he came from before watching. Plus, there are just not too many shows that have a unique setting like the hollers of Kentucky.

Where To Watch Justified

If you’re interested in watching the original Justfied series, you can stream it in its entirely on Hulu. If you’re interested in seeing more Raylan Givens in the future, it sounds like you’ll need to make sure and tune in to new episodes of the sequel series so FX knows to green light another show. Even if the cast and creative team are down to come back, it’s going to be up to the studios to let the project happen.
