When it comes to John Cena, one thing is for sure — the guy is dedicated. Whether it’s with his WWE persona, his physique, ridiculous dance routines, or his acting career, you can tell he gives it his all. His most recent and arguably his best acting role was in the James Gunn-created series Peacemaker. Cena did a great job in the show and he did a great job in his appearance as the character in The Suicide Squad. Cena really proved his dedication to the role before the movie even came out, doing all of his press in the Peacemaker costume.

In a recent interview with GQ, John Cena revealed the reason he chose to wear the Peacemaker costume in public so much. It has a lot to do with his background in wrestling and how dedication to a character can help people recognize them and look forward to their appearances. Cena further explained how it helped him stand out in a movie that is full of characters, stating “in The Suicide Squad, you’ve got twenty to twenty-five characters, and I wanted to make mine familiar. So I asked to do all the press in uniform, and they couldn’t believe that. But I wanted the audience to know who Peacemaker was before they saw Peacemaker.”

He definitely makes a good point, and the tactic seemed to work because he ended up getting a full HBO show out of it, which has already been renewed for a second season. The show was a critical and commercial hit and it has become one of the best DC properties their modern cinematic universe has to offer. This is thanks in no small part to John Cena’s portrayal of a character that could have easily come off as grating. Cena’s performance, along with the writing from James Gunn, makes the character a nuanced and empathetic figure that is also really fun to watch.

If you’re looking to catch up with one of John Cena’s best performances, The Suicide Squad is a good place to start. No, not the one with Jared Leto’s Joker. The Suicide Squad is also directed and written by James Gunn and is a lot better than 2016’s Suicide Squad. It also introduces us to Peacemaker and gives some important backstory for the HBO sequel show. If you enjoy The Suicide Squad, then Peacemaker should definitely be the next watch on your list. It’s arguably even better and it’s a solid watch throughout all eight of its episodes. Critics and audiences agree, with it getting a whopping 94% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and 88% on the audience score.

While we wait for Season 2 of Peacemaker to come to fruition, we’ve got plenty of upcoming John Cena content. On the Peacock streaming platform, you can hear him narrate the documentary series WWE Evil, which tells the story of different antagonists, or “heels”, from WWE history. He also has two films expected to release in 2022, with Snafu and Argylle. Snafu stars John Cena alongside Jackie Chan as two ex-special forces operatives and Aryglle is a spy flick that also stars Henry Cavill, Ariana DeBose, Samuel L. Jackson, and Bryce Dallas Howard.
