Invasion

Judging by the trailer for Apple TV+’s Invasion Season 2, things are going to get worse for the people of Earth before they get any better. The Apple original series follows an alien invasion through the point of view of several different characters across the world. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the new season of the underrated sci-fi series drops today on Apple’s streaming service.

The invasion is once again shown through the eyes of people around the world, including newcomer Aneesha, played by Golshifteh Farahani, a mother of two desperately trying to lead her family to survival.

Invasion Season 2 starts just a few months after the Season 1 finale, with the malevolent alien forces ramping up their attacks against humankind. The creepy buggers are aiming for an all-out war, but a few determined humans refuse to give up the fight.

The showrunner is very proud of the fact that he consulted experts from NASA when developing Invasion, picking their brains for help with the show’s astrophysics as well as what real-life plans the world’s militaries have in place in the unlikely event that a real alien invasion breaks out.

Other new characters introduced in Invasion Season 2 are Trevante (Shamier Anderson), a Navy Seal and Afghan War veteran, and school children Jamila (India Brown) and Monty (Paddy Holland), who are forced to continue on after their friend Caspar (Billy Barratt) has a seizure caused by the Invasion which leaves him brain dead.

The series was created by Simon Kinberg, who also serves as Invasion‘s showrunner and David Weil. Kinberg is the producer of hit movies like The Martian and Logan, as well as the unmitigated dumpster fire Fan4stic—we’re hardly the first to say it, but the movie really is that bad.

Given that some critics felt like the first season of Invasion was all set up with no great payoff, it’s a good bet that Season 2 will ramp up the action now that the premise is firmly established.

Kinberg told THR that, in his opinion, one of the things science fiction often gets wrong when it comes to aliens is “what is in place right now in our militaries and our governments in case of an alien visitation.”

Given that some critics felt like the first season of Invasion was all set up with no great payoff, it’s a good bet that Season 2 will ramp up the action now that the premise is firmly established. The Invasion Season 2 trailer goes pretty far in affirming that assumption with its breakneck pace and focus on action sequences. Fans of the first season should find Season 2 just as good, if not better, with its emphasis on excitement over exposition.

Apple TV+ has struggled since its launch to find its place next to competitor streaming services like Netflix and Hulu. Thanks to hits like Ted Lasso and Severance the streamer is finally inching its way closer to the big players in the streaming game. If you’re one of the proud subscribers to Apple TV+, you can stream the first episode of Invasion Season 2 right now.
